If someone is put off buying a club because a handful of fans have protested after two relegations in a row, the worst home form (presumably) in the club's history, a season that guarantees that next season will be, at best, the joint lowest the club has ever finished and whilst paying fortunes to people who are vastly underperforming then maybe owning a football club isn't for them. We've kept our mouths shut, we've barely displayed any anger, where has it got us?
Now I'm not saying I'm in favour of a protest myself, but I certainly won't criticise anyone who does want to make their feelings known, fair play to them
When have "we" kept our mouths shut?
There's been booing in almost every match for the last 2 years and chants of "you're not fit to wear the shirt" since at least the beginning of this season, probably some last year too amongst the "are you watching Ellis Short" chants.
There's been so much discontent that a new fan group has been set up to put forward the points of view of the fans.
At no stage in our downfall have "we" kept our mouths shut.
I would love to see this season played again with the crowds genuinely
not displaying their anger. In my opinion, displaying our anger so frequently has had a detrimental effect on the confidence of many of the players and contributed at least
a little towards us being where we are now.
Obviously there are other factors and we can get into the chicken and egg argument about results and abuse, debate freedom of speech etc. as we've done many times before but the simple fact is that as long as there's
some abuse being dished out by
some fans, we'll never know what could have happened if there had been
no abuse.
From the other side, I suppose you could say that as long as there are people who
aren't abusive, we'll never know what we could have achieved if
everyone were abusive, but how many situations in any walk of life can you honestly say have been improved by displaying anger towards the people trying to do their job? How many people do you know that feel
more motivated,
more happy to stay at their place of employment,
more wanting to push themselves further to the limit when they are receiving regular abuse?
Speaking for myself, I know that in a couple of jobs I've had in the past, when I've been trying my best but failing to be recognised for it and instead get abuse, it has the opposite effect on me; it makes me think "Well, fuck you then, you'll get the bare minimum from me in future! What's the point me busting a gut when all I get is abuse for it anyway? Fuck it, I'm going to look for another job!"
Players are just people.
