Anyone not wanting Europe?

Can't believe I'm asking this but there's a few lads in work this morning saying we shouldn't be looking to win on Sunday as if we qualify for europe it all but guarentees relegation next year...

Just wondering if anyone shares the same opinion? For me it's a no brainer, opportunities like this don't come around often and we should be snapping the hands off it.
Getting promotion through the play offs almost guarantees relegation and we haven’t ever been in danger.
If we qualify for Europe I am sure the owners will do what is required to maintain progression.

What are we playing for then if it’s not to get into Europe/win trophy’s etc

If we were nearly qualifying for champions league then would the your thoughts still be the same?

We should mate, can’t choose the right time to get into Europe, just like we couldn’t choose the right time to go up

All ready told the missus that if we are drawn against somebody from a back water country, I'm going :D
I was telling mine after the game yesterday that she already owes me a continental trip.

"It's not my idea of fun sitting watching a football match like".

"You don't have to come."

Fuck it, let's gan to Frankfurt!

I want it but I think it potentially makes survival next season harder, based on nothing other than seeing other teams struggle with their squad with the extra games. And we don’t exactly have strength in depth at the moment.

2 days off work (Thursday/ Friday)

Fly out Thursday morning, sitting in a piazza somewhere in eastern Europe in the sun, drinking cheap beer surrounded by Sunderland fans and friendly but bewildered locals, match on the evening, spend the next day having a look about and fly home Saturday morning.

I'm already there in my head

I'm warming to the idea .......

Imagine telling the players, who've worked their socks off all season, not to go for it on Sunday because we're scared of what next season might bring!

I don't think they'd take too kindly to that, and a few would be thinking what's the point of being here if the club is scared to progress.
The mindset in the club right now, driven by all parties from exec to management to players, is so positive and strong and progressive that they won't be worried for one second about the challenge next season if we're in Europe.

I'm fact, they'd relish it.

Its a strange mentality which i have never understood. People seem to think it is better to slowly build. For me it is a one off season where a combination of incredible recruitment, and extra spots in the premier league, mean we have a chance. We have to grasp it with both hands

Also, Europe might open the door to a higher calibre of player coming in, as well as lowering the chances of some players leaving in search of European football (granted its not exactly champions league but still)

Then the final part, which is the fact we would go into a European tournament as one of the favourites (imagine someone told you this 5 years ago, even last year really) which means we might win a trophy as well as getting to tour Europe. Palace are in the final of the conference. Villa and Forest battled it out for the place in the Europa final. Villa are flying, and the other two are safe from relegation.

I do think the excuse of not being bothered about europe is also a defence mechanism ahead of the mockery from them up the road if we do fail. Same 'fans' have us as getting beat off them everytime we play them and had us as relegated at the start of the season. Weird mentality but each to their own

we'd have to recruit for it for sure. i'd love it personally. probably an extra 8-10 games to watch but yes it would require us to add 6-8 decent players to our squad and replace any that leave.

We managed just fine despite AFCON and a fair few injuries throughout this season. We would strengthen the squad and bring in extra revenue. There is no reason why we shouldn't go for it.

Almost zero chance of winning it, but the CL is a different kettle. More prestige, more money. More scope to build.

That said, taking part now and then hasn't exactly worked out for the scum, Leicester, Leeds, etc...

I am on your side of this argument, but using the champions league doesnt feel like a fair way to judge it mind. Lightyears apart in terms of finances, appeal and the quality of players.

We have to push for Europe. We can beat Chelsea and it would send a huge message if we do. We are a club that young lads can come to and actually be part of something, rather than hopping club to club and ending up in the Chelsea 3rd team
