Another perspective re Xhaka

Main thing I liked from that article was that Sunderland would need “silly money” for then to agree to sell Wilson, love that, a player who loves the club and is becoming a somewhat proven PL finisher, i’d love to keep him 😎

Almost like Xhaka, Louis-Dreyfus, Le Bris, Ghisolfi and all the players want this issue ffs. Do people think they all came here to NOT play European football and just meander along year after year in 10th?
There's been some Leeds fans coming out with this kind of stuff as well, about how they don't want Europe, they want to slowly improve year-on-year and get into Europe at a time of their choosing in a couple of years. 😀

They say this as though they're just guaranteed constant upwards progression, and get to choose when they'll decide theyre ready to qualify. They might get relegated again in a year or 2 and not get the opportunity to play in Europe for another 10-20 years. Its a strange attitude of not wanting success in case they're not ready.

“They’re also going to need much more depth coming in with European games as well. And with depth comes the risk of unsettling the tight-knit squad they had. And can they manage to balance that and keep it going? It’s a hell of a challenge to try and do that.”

This ‘tight-not squad’ was pretty much put together only a year ago. No reason any additions won’t settle in or that it’s different to a player in any other team out there when new signings join.

Nonsense article with quotes from someone trying to get some publicity imo.

What makes people think we would be playing Xhaka in a midweek game again Bumfuck Turkmenistan United anyway? Firstly, we'll buy probably 6 or 7 players this summer to give us more depth, and secondly we'll use european games to give younger and or players who are needing experience and game time. IF we progress and it looks like we'll actually win something, then we'll send the first team out. Everyone seems to think we're not going to do a RLB rebuild again. I'm convinced we will and it'll be even better than last summer.
You realise we've qualified for the Europa League, not the Conference League? We won't be playing too many teams from 'Turkmenistan'. We'll be playing some of the likes of Benfica, AC Milan, Marseille, Hoffenheim, Leverkusen, Besiktas, Twente, Real Sociedad, Juventus, Celta Vigo, Braga, Trabzonspor etc.

Yes we'll play a couple of very winnable games against minnows most likely, but this is a decent competition with some decent/semi-regular CL teams in it.

In the two seasons before we signed him, he played 50 and 49 games - more than any other season in his career.

He only played 36 games last season including cup games.

On top of that I can’t imagine any of this would be something the club hasn’t already thought about.

Also he’s only 33. The way people are going on it’s like he’s in his 50s ffs.

Footballers now are not the same as in the 80s and 90s. They look after themselves better, generally don’t drink as much, and will naturally play longer.

They’re just bitter that their great season has been made to look incredibly ordinary by Sunderland.

Anyone paying attention to FootballInsider articles needs their heads read. At least they’ve moved on from paying Carlton Palmer for his uninformed takes on our club I guess.

The article says nothing that isn't obvious to anyone we are going to play more matches so we need a bigger first team squad to rotate players it's not rocket science. This guy is a consultant for football clubs, would you pay for his advice if a club needs someone like him they must have a crap management team.

He's not wrong, we can't really be taking Granit's presence in the starting XI for granted next season at his age with all the extra games. We need to find the right cover for him this transfer window.
Granit will be good for another 3 or 4 seasons. He looks after himself.

He won’t play a lot in the league phase of the Europa League. 10 points from 8 games will be enough to get into the businesses end of the competition. He will either be sub or subbed for most of them.

"Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness" Ffs

I don't think we need to take advice from an obese Earthworm Jim whose only claim to fame is once running Everton and getting sacked from Villa for offensive social media posts

I certainly dont think we will be playing the same 11 Thursday then Sunday.....and certainly not if we have already qualified, or not, for next round.

As for top finishing top 10, I think all Sunderland supporters understand the situation with the schedule and games...as long as we aren't in that relegation zone. This is all still new to us and we won't be getting on anyone's backs if we down in bottom half. We are still building a squad.

It'll be his best season ever. He's going to be 34 and 34 has always been a significant number for him. Thats how these things work right?

He wont start in EL unless its against the better teams imo. Also this lad still covered the most distance in the league this season, so despite his age his levels are unbelievable
I agree - I'd be inclined to save Xhaka for the PL games, as we're unlikely to win the Euro League. Let's take the money from the guaranteed 8 games in Europe, then see if we get lucky and progress further, but save Xhaka to make sure our league form does not drop off.
