Anderson vs Steyn

Didn't say it was a poor attack and it will be a cracker. However, as Tendulkar remarks, we have better strength in depth. Re: spin. Swann is currently a completely different class to Tahir.

Tahir is arguably the worst frontline spinner in any of the Test nations. Duminy is a far better bowler and is an occasional.

I'm sure Jimmy's not far off becoming England's leading test wicket taker. If he does break that record, should we hold him in a higher regard than Botham, Willis, Trueman, Gough etc?

well we, the discerning fans might, but I'd hazard a guess that Essex Boy might disagree! :-)

 The only quick in the world that would be world class in any era having done it over his entire career.

Didn't Steyn play about 7 years ago on that 05 tour and get crashed to all parts?

correct and the Pakistan spinner Amjal would be anarl.

the rest are good, very good like Jimmy, but not in that top echelon where the likes of Murali, Donald, Ambrose etc stood

Hang on... Does this mean Philander's world class too? He's got about 55 wickets in 8 tests. Technically his whole career.

Basically the whole argument's invalid, because Jimmy could take 10 wickets in every match from now until 2016, but he wouldn't be world class because he hasn't done it over his whole career.

Of course players can be world class without doing it for their whole career. I think Jimmy is a world class bowler. However the differnce between say Jimmy and Steyn, Marshall, McGrath, Ambrose, Walsh, Hadlee etc is that they have performed at a world class level more or less from the start to the end of their distinguished careers and why they are true greats of the game.

Steyn is nowhere near as good as that lot yet IMO. Still think you can get to Steyn if you get your head straight.

On a given day yes. I also recall Mark Butcher carting McGrath to all parts of Headingley. Since the likes of Hadlee, Botham, Marshall, Ambrose, Waqar and Wasim etc were in their pomp test cricket has become much more batsman friendly with flatter pitches and rules generally favouring batsmen. In the past an bowling average of 25 was deemed top class and now it is probably nearer 30.

Dale Steyn averages 23 runs per wicket in modern day cricket - hes a great bowler.
