Anderson finished?

spot on.....

For what it's worth, Anderson in Asia = 66 Test wkts at 29. Dennis Lillee in Asia = 6 wkts at 68. Now, Lillee is an all-time great. But the fact that he took 349 of his 355 Test wickets in Aus, Eng and NZ is rarely held against him in the same way. Funny how narratives tak shape.

and

James Anderson's 10 over spell either side of lunch saw him take 3-16.
Away from home, in his last 14 Tests Anderson has taken 49 wickets at 23.47.

I'd be quite happy for England to not play a specialist spinner in the future, it's one of those things that's overrated - as soon as there's a flat spell the commentators will bang on about how there should be a specialist spinner. I remember it endlessly with Giles, who was a total liability most of the time and would pick up random wickets from being smashed around like in a ODI slog. The 2005 Ashes particularly. Bess & Leach aren't anywhere near as useless fortunately. I'd back someone like Stokes to break a partnership more than a finger spinner.

And yes 5 seamers will do something 4 seamers will not. They will bowl with more aggression and pace, you're not using Bess or Leach to hold an end and release the pressure. Given it's England it's likely to be one of Wood, Broad or Anderson that misses out, that could be quite the difference. It's up to the finger spinners to show they can do more than hold an end when it's flat really.

Gets better with age although he and Wood could do with more support from the spinners.

Ridiculous amount of overs for pacemen to be bowling in those conditions.

Thing is, people otuside England still use his overall average to say he is not that high up

its nonsense, he played far too young, and that period has badly distored his average

Since 2010 he has 450 wickets at 23!! thats up there with the best ever.

I almos thtink if that was just his record, those in Australia and co would rate him more

I think his record since 2015 or so is even more mental, like under 20, will try and find it.

Stupendous cricketer, that catch he took in this Sri Lankan 2nd innings was fantastic.

As has been pointed out, he played too young and then England made him change his action which set him back. One of the best bowlers in World Cricket, ever. Still is.
