Well he wouldn’t do this without assurances so guess that’s it. If it’s just to get a better contract then there’s other ways of doing it and he can now fuck off as you don’t do that and come back from it.

The club statement is a strange one as well. Based on what we know he looks as good as gone.

Either they are saying they want to keep him to save face with supporters, or they plan to counter Stokes offer with a better one.

Unreal.

But it's his decision! If he wants to go to Stoke over staying at Sunderland that's on him (and there are lots of reasons why, as have been outlined in the thread: salary, transfer control, family ties, etc)
Strong leadership, ambition, been flexible for someone so key to your operation can influence that decision

"Following a formal approach by SCFC, the Club is contractually obliged to permit the Head Coach to start a dialogue with the Potters."

If he wasn't interested, he would have said no.

We all know what's going to happen now.

Nick Barnes shook his hand on the way out. Obviously gone
Not what the previous said. The words were along lines of he shook his hand last night and it felt like goodbye.

I am reading into this that in hindsight it felt like a goodbye shake

I still don’t believe it’s happening because other than twitter twatter and a cancelled presser because a previous meeting ran over there is no evidence.
