Alexandre Mendy (transfer rumour)

Our strikers got very little quality service last season. Most would have struggled with that standard.
Chicken and egg though.

Did the midfield stop passing to them because they never made runs? Or did they stop making runs because the midfield never passed to them?

I must admit, when I played football and there was a truely shite player in a decent position, or one of our better players in a shit position, the pass was going to the better player every time. I’m sure if we still had LND up front there would have been some forward passes.

Don't really see the issue, we want experience in that position, the lad has had a good few seasons of scoring goals and is playing at the same level we are.

It's a gamble like as with any player, especially given we don't know what the level is like.

Maja for instance had probably a better record in Ligue 1 than Mendy and then dropped to Ligue 2 and it instantly improved, whilst Mendy's took time and Maja's record at this level isnt exactly great.

There's obviously going to be variables in terms of games started and the strength of each team they played for, positions played in etc. I would imagine that ligue 2 is not anywhere near as strong as the Championship as a whole and has nowhere near the same level of money in it. But given his record and him looking to have certain strengths he's probably worth that gamble.

That's not really that true. We often played balls through or crosses or for certain periods we were trying to play on the break to play the likes of Burstow and Rusyn in, either muscled off the ball, not anticipated, made the wrong runs etc. As a team though we weren't strong enough to continue playing to something that wasn't there and working, that mostly wasn't even capable of contributing in general play, so we could play off them and work our way up the pitch.

The fact Jobe made a far better fist of it than any of them shows where the problem mainly lies.

When Roberts was fit or Ba when Roberts wasn't fit - do they really put service on a plate when they're playing for a striker? Generally the answer would be no, but how many do at this level?

But did they get the ball in the box, around the area for someone to capitalise on the ball fizzing about even if they weren't providing pin point crosses? Absolutely they were.

A striker just featuring more in general play would help us more than anything, nevermind one that could score 15+.
