Alexandre Mendy (transfer rumour)

I don’t see us getting out of this league (in the right direction) under this ownership.

Not only will clubs benefitting from parachute payments regularly finish above us but other clubs who are prepared to invest sensibly will also have the quality of player to do so.

I’m convinced our owners plan for promotion is to spend the bare minimum and hope every other club in the league commit financial suicide and self implode.

It could work by 2038
Spot on. With the lack of competent strikers there is real danger of going back to div3

I was half-joking.

Obviously we’ve sunk much further than most clubs over the last decade but pre-Moyes we were a fixture in the PL for 10 seasons (albeit we were finishing at the bottom end every year). The proper failure started then.

We are still in a much better position than we were when I first started supporting Sunderland in the early/mid-90s. As a kid growing up in Scotland, more people incorrectly thought I was wearing a Southampton shirt than recognised me as a Sunderland fan. That hasn’t happened for at least 25 years now!

To be honest, I half envied you saying 8 years 😃

1964 was when I started watching us, just imagine the ups and downs endured in the last 60 years 😳

I quite like Gibson at M***********h, though.
One of the last of the owners who genuinely care for their club, rather than being there to rinse it. Local lad, too.

He hasn't - lots of the fees are not the actual values - the fees are the biggest possible outlay. It is well known among clubs that we pay very little upfront and its all incentive based. If you really think anyone pays 2 mill upfront for Hjelde, I have a bridge to sell you.
Is it?

Then it’s just an academy for big clubs then.
Irrespective of that side of things, you can't argue we've had decent business on the back of our academy. Henderson and Pickford brought in a combined £55m. Then there's other players who brought in smaller but decent fees (likes of Waghorn, Gooch).
You can even mention Jack Colback. He wasn't sold for a fee, but played over 100 games for us in the premier league which would have saved a fair few million on signing someone had he not been there.

Then we currently have Patterson and Dan Neil who are easily north of £10m each in today's market. Then who knows what the future looks like for Chris Rigg.

There are always going to be cases of big fish picking up our best talent. But let's not pretend our academy hasn't served us well over the years

Agreed - good post. Embleton also did his bit especially with the play off final goal.

I believe the plan is to try and penny pinch our way to the premier league by pulling together a load of young players with high potential. Then hoping they all click at the same time. This season is probably the one where they are looking at our squad and expecting some players to really kick on. Likes of Ballard, Neil, Hume, Jobe etc have now had some decent football behind them.

It was nearly a stroke of genius when we sneaked into the play offs a few years back. Had they realised that and replaced stewart in the january we wouldn't be in this league

Any goal scoring strikers coming through the acadamy before the Cardiff game?

And yet the man who was behind that stroke of genius, was booted out before Christmas of the following season as they thought Michael Beale was better qualified to take us the next step!

Some people on here are giving us a 7 or 8 for how well the summer has gone so far! 🤦

Without his constant stream of injuries, he could have been a very good player for us as well. It’s just a shame his development has been disrupted so much, I hope he really kicks on over the next couple of seasons after his move to Blackpool.

He told Speakman what was required to push on when Stewart and Evans got injured, he was completely ignored. Then to compound the problem he was stitched up in last summers transfer window. Then after the Millwall game having created enough chances to win 2 games he again highlighted the problems he was having trying to integrate young players in to a team whilst attempting to win games. We all know what happen next.

Pretty much spot on bar the last sentence.

IMO if we had gone up we would have done exactly the same as the 3 promoted teams and come straight back down (financially better off with probably a better chance of getting promoted again but I can’t imagine we would have stayed up)

I'm saying he's a better owner than our lot.

BTW, if they've failed for 15 years, wtf have we done?

I’m not the one bigging him up and comparing him to whoever our owners have been during that period.

To compare to our current owner, they have had two seasons in the championship at the same time. Both made the plays offs one year and both failed last season

We also made money on Maja and Asoro who used our academy as a finishing school.

😂 😂😂😂 All Freebies. 1 fairly decent, one injury prone, one released by Stoke.
