Alexandre Mendy (transfer rumour)

Let’s not mince words at this moment if a last minute big bid comes I for Clarke and he wants the move we are completely fucked. Then the price of all our targets goes up. We need this sorting before we get a late window bid for our prized asset or we could be in some shite.
Exactly. If someone comes in with a daft bid for Clarke, we won’t be able to turn it down. Then we are completely fucked for goals.

We were 40 goals off previously league one Ipswich’s goals total, who got promoted. We are massively lacking in goals in that squad.

I agree with what you said, that injuries didn’t help and the poor buggers had to deal with Dodds as their manager. But we were miles off the top two. The playoffs are a lottery. If you are a club serious about promotion to the Premier League, you go for the top two.
Dodds , who is still here .

Laughable.

He’s gone on a major charm offensive with the players this pre-season, to try to win back their affections. Gone super touchy-feely and showering them with praise and giving it the ‘best pals’ act, since they all came back. Which is bizarre, after how he went on in post-match press conferences last year, talking about ‘giving them the silent treatment.’ Also part of the ‘look how good I am’ act to win RLB over.

If he’s the Bellingham messiah of player development then give him a job in the academy, with the young’uns. He’s not got the personality you want as a number two in a team that’s aiming for the Premier League.

Think you’re getting a bit carried away there. We’ve signed Browne, who already looks our best midfielder along with Neil, and Poveda, who looks like he has a lot of quality.
We’re all frustrated we haven’t signed a striker yet, but haway man.
"Looks our best midfielder" and "looks like he has a lot of quality"
Aye reeto "looks" like im carried away and should be happy with the direction of the club.
We sold loads of strips ye knaar.

Waited all this time and he'll probably be shite anyway.
I’ve honestly not seen the lad play can’t say I’ve ever watched a second tier French game. At this point a specialist striker that’s played that position with any sort of experience is gonna be an upgrade on kids and forcing players like rushy and jobe there that ain’t suited to the role.

When you try sign a player it makes perfect sense to negotiate and hold out for a good, sensible deal. However, there's a point where your opposition know how utterly desperate you are that you effectively lose that right due to your own incompetency, lack of forward planning and neglect. We are at that point. There are times you need to pay a bit more than you were prepared to, and this is one of them, otherwise we're just doing more damage to ourselves.

We’ve signed a backup goalkeeper, a midfielder who is experienced and with leadership qualities, and a creative player, who is incredibly skilful — although in his last two years of football has contributed just 2 goals and 2 assists.

It’s understandable that a lot of fans are concerned that’s all we’ve signed so far, given how poorly we performed last year in the majority of the season. A blind man could see where we are lacking depth and quality, to get us promoted.

Why does it have to be so unbalanced?

Why is everything so extreme?

We need a striker and DM, and the failure to sign these two players is ridiculous.

But we can also acknowledge that the club have made a few canny, more experienced additions, have hired an interesting coach who would struggle to do worse, have signed the hottest property in youth football to professional terms and have also so far kept all our players, including the 20 goal a season winger who 67% of threads on the board last year started with “WHEN Clarke is sold”.

My definition of "plenty of time" in this context is a few months, ie; start planning toward the end of what was an obviously disappointing season, identify your target(s), get him signed. 18 months to two years, depending on your viewpoint, stretches the definition like a bucket load of silly putty.
The big failure was Burstow, PL loans like Stansfield, Archer, Cannon, Simms and even Rhian Brewster were successful. If he'd been of that standard we could have got away with mixing in the others.

This.

It appears as if the new owners (Mbappe and co.) have came in and played hard ball, we either pay more or find a new target late in the day, I’d say just give them a bit more than we had in place with the previous owners and get it done.

He’s steadily held a value of around £2.0m for a while, which has increased to £3m > £3.5m > £4.0m over the last three seasons, where he’s been scoring regularly. The transfer fee will be interesting, if we get it over the line. We could’ve just got him at the end of the season, had him moved into a house, family over, settled, etc.; with a full pre-season with the rest of the squad. But that would’ve meant paying the asking price.
