Alexandre Mendy (transfer rumour)

My definition of "plenty of time" in this context is a few months, ie; start planning toward the end of what was an obviously disappointing season, identify your target(s), get him signed. 18 months to two years, depending on your viewpoint, stretches the definition like a bucket load of silly putty.
So by agreeing a deal for Mendy back in June only to be halted by a sale of the club, isn't doing exactly what you're asking?

Other than appointing a seemingly competent head coach we haven’t improved anywhere.
Browne is Evan’s replacement
Poveda, who knows…
The goalies, like for like.
No assistant coaches and unbelievably going into the season start with no new strikers.
Utter incompetence for me, we are going to miss out on points because of sheer inability to attract a goal scoring striker or two!
How are people still defending not having a ready made striker on the books?...it's an absolute joke.

We’ve signed a backup goalkeeper, a midfielder who is experienced and with leadership qualities, and a creative player, who is incredibly skilful — although in his last two years of football has contributed just 2 goals and 2 assists.

It’s understandable that a lot of fans are concerned that’s all we’ve signed so far, given how poorly we performed last year in the majority of the season. A blind man could see where we are lacking depth and quality, to get us promoted.

However why is poveda not match ready we’ve had him a few weeks now why bring a supposedly first team starter to our club who is not ready to play
Aye let’s NOT sign a player because he may miss the first couple of games, doesn’t matter that we have 44 more, if he’s not ready for the first 1 or 2 games then there’s no point.

Also, he won’t be a starter as it stands.

Why do people keep saying this? We signed 4 strikers last year.

They havent turned out how we thought, It is not ‘gross mismanagement’

We also play with two central midfielders in a 4231, We had Evans who unfortunatley had a season ending injury.

Serious question, If we play 4231, Who gets dropped from Neil or Browne? Both those and a CDM cant play in a 4231 formation.
Remind me how many goals and assists these forwards contributed last season.

I have said Browne is a good signing but we still need a DCM.

Spot on. He replaced Michael Bridges as a late substitute against Nottingham Forest in a 1-1 draw on 8th November 1997 (a match in which Leo Hjelde's father, Jon Olav, equalised for the visitors). Quinn started the next game away to Portsmouth and scored in a 4-1 victory and went on to strike up that wonderful partnership with Kevin Phillips. Happy days

That's quite amazing that both times he came into the team to start we won 4-1

He didn't prove me wrong, I'd seen Niall Quinn play on many occasions and I knew he was a class act. I always wanted Sunderland to sign him, I couldn't believe it when we did. I was gutted when he got the season ending injury. If Quinn had stayed mostly fit, we would of 100% stayed up that year, he was that good, and influential.

Since if the goal that was wrongfully disallowed against Leicester had been allowed it would have been enough to stay up, I think it's pretty certain that if either quinn or Coton had stayed fit we would have stayed up

I was pretty meh about it over the past 18 months, watching the incompetence from the club last season astounds me that it wasn’t sorted within weeks of the season ending.
As it stands, it will be another poor season.
I have little faith in these lot pulling something out of the bag, however I’ll be as happy as the speakman cult following if they manage to get two competent goal scorers who are fit and will dovetail straight into the team scoring goals

agree with DCM and i think we need another 4 maybe 5 players.

first 11 on paper is ok providing we bring it a striker and keep clarke.

but with injuries and suspensions, what we have in the squad to come in for them players is very poor IMO.

For half the season we performed reasonably well and were still just outside the top 6 when Beale left iirc. The main reason for our slide at the backend of last season was due to the coaching situation rather than the players. They were still clearly baffled not only by the decision to ditch Mowbray and then shortly after Beale.....but also that Dodds suddenly wanted to play a completely different way.
Injuries to key players eg Roberts and Clarke also didnt help

....and if Mendy doesn't sign for us, where's the back up plan?
If Mendy is their first choice, then they will need to ensure that one is dead in the water first before moving on.

Until that happens how do you know there isn't a back up plan?

No one had heard anything about Poveda until 24 hours before he signed

Tied down a couple of key players to longer conrracts

New head coach who has us playing high press and with intensity

New centre mid who has already given the team a lift.

New winger who will challenge clarke / roberts with his quality once fully fit

Other than not bringing a forward in yet we have done all the necessary things for this team to move forward. Directors have clearly changed tact to try and succeed.

Have a bit faith

I think we will all be happy when the window closes, I honestly don't think we will be left short as we have been after previous windows have closed. I'm convinced lessons have been learned.

OK, given the very obvious need for proven strikers and that it’s now just a few days to the start of the season - we all have every right to be worried and annoyed

Get your fkn fingers out man ffs

Let’s not mince words at this moment if a last minute big bid comes I for Clarke and he wants the move we are completely fucked. Then the price of all our targets goes up. We need this sorting before we get a late window bid for our prized asset or we could be in some shite.

We were 40 goals off previously league one Ipswich’s goals total, who got promoted. We are massively lacking in goals in that squad.

I agree with what you said, that injuries didn’t help and the poor buggers had to deal with Dodds as their manager. But we were miles off the top two. The playoffs are a lottery. If you are a club serious about promotion to the Premier League, you go for the top two.
