Cook's averages year on year....

2015: 54.56
2016: 42.33
2017: 47.31

Can we have three top order batsmen who are that poor please?
3 huge centuries have distorted his average. I'm not saying he hasn't been a great player but he is not contributing enough these days.

Been a fantastic player but the time is right.
I’m a bit in two minds, I think you’re right in a sense of us moving on and trying to find a new opening partnership may actually be easier than trying to find ‘another new partner for Cook’.

It is a great opportunity and I’m looking forward to a fresh start. No doubt though he’s been a fantastic player and it’s sad he won’t be around anymore and a shame he couldn’t see out this winter and the Ashes next year.

Good stats.

If anyone has he's earned the right to decide when to go. He's probably finding it difficult and probably not finding the enthusiasm to battle it out. Fair enough.

I hope he doesn't retire from all cricket. Colly reinvented himself after he stopped playing for England with Durham I hope Cook does the same with Essex.

Looking at that it's just really since the start of the 2107 summer that his form has dropped off and the 50s disappear.

Still though, can we have three who are as poor as he's been?

So,he needs replacing, but with whom? It's not as though they'd be coming into a settled batting line up.....as it is we need new players for the top 3 in the order.

He's said he will be back with Essex next season.

I reckon:

Burns - Evens
Stoneman - 3/1
Burns and Stoneman, with KJ dropped: 5/1
Mitchell - 10/1
Gubbins - 20/1
Robson - 50/1

It is right. Yet another judicious leave from Alastair Cook.

Fantastic player, I've probably seen him bat live more than any other player. Very sad day for me.

Aye. Same. Been watching him broad and jimmy for most my life

Tribute:
Thanks for your service. Fantastic player in his prime and will always be remembered for demolishing the Aussie bowling in 2010/11. Also a decent captain, all round good bloke and fantastic slip fielder.

Discussion:
Legendary in the first half of his career, pretty average from 2014 onwards, one or two double tons on flat batting tracks aside.

Gooch is spot on, he has flat-lined (I'd actually say regressed looking at the way he got out in the second innings at Southampton). I would rather see Ramprakash and Thorpe given the bullet and new batting coaches brought in to work with Cook: they have failed all our batsmen, not just Cook.

Also, why the hell do we have this situation where a senior player has to announce his retirement to give the selectors 'permission' to drop him and pick another player? All players - regardless of their background - should be available for selection and non-selection, depending on form, and consider it an honour to play for their country. It's a jobs for the boys mentality we really need to get away from - just look at how Moeen and Buttler responded to being dropped and reselected.

I couldn’t believe this fuckin post like

Pretty shameful to try and spin it to have ago at him.

You even used the phrase jobs for the boys ffs

It’s almost as if other people’s averages strip out big scores....
His average is impressive but only tells a small part of the story. Adam Voges has the 2nd best test average of all time, not many people would suggest he's the 2nd best test batsman of all time.
