Adam Johnson Trial Verdict

I'm starting to hope Johnson appeals so the club can go to court and have Byrne appear as their legal representative.

That would either clear or condemn her but would at least put the whole affair in the public domain.

I'd also like to see Johnson repeat his claims in court during his appeal.

I can't see there being an appeal against the verdict. That works both way and he was found not guilty on the more serious offence.

I can see an appeal against sentence though as possible.

I'll guarantee this thread is deleted and all of haway's hard work is lost

I don't mind, I've wasted a full 24 hours I was meant to be working now so I could do with getting off my laptop. For some reason once I've got stuff in this thread it's like smack.

What's the longest thread of all time?
7,000 on Borini I think.

edit- should probably can this before then, it's a slightly shit thread to have as the smb's longest.

Why is she going from Durham to London, or wherever, to give the BBC an exclusive on that subject?

Does that make sense to you mate?

Whether we like it or not it's a massive news story and everyone involved is going to be making sure their involvement is presented favourably.....It's just the police getting their twopence worth in with a pre-emptive strike.

Why would Byrne be in court for an appeal?

I'd love to know some more facts about the meeting. I maybe being niave but I can't imagine the club would be given a huge dossier of evidence, with statements from both parties and transcripts of nearly 900 messages and the cops saying, have a good read and drop it back at the station when you're done with it.

Surely that would have been incredibly dangerous?

The club would have got nowt off the cops except notification about his arrest and why he'd been arrested.

Det Insp Sampson told jurors that on the day of Johnson's arrest she met with SAFC chief exec Margaret Byrne to inform her of the allegations facing the player.

"I disclosed the offences which Mr Johnson had been arrested for, and considered safeguarding for any other young people who may come into contact with him in his role as a professional footballer."

The senior officer said particulars of the offences were not discussed, as Johnson had not been interviewed. What he said in interview was still not disclosed to the club.

Last bit there, club couldn't possibly known the full details of what happened at that point as Johnson hadn't even been interviewed and even when he was, the club weren't told what the contents of that interview were. Whatever documents the club received were handed to Johnson's QC when Johnson, his dad, his QC and Byrne were in a later meeting. Where the documents came from hasn't been specified but I'm assuming they came from his QC, as they couldn't have come from the police or the CPS. What the documents contained hasn't been clarified either.

'Admits she exaggerates'. Yes, I'm sure, so does everyone. That is not the same as:

A jury obviously believed her when she said he sexually assaulted her. Do you or do you not accept that?
Based on 1 text message, they also decided she lied over the bj.

Integral role in it to ;)

Surely what she's saying is more important than what she perhaps should/shouldn't be doing?

Of course it's important ...... it's the motive behind it I can't understand.

What is it the police are trying to do ....... defend Johnson, attack the club, protect themselves?

I just don't understand why they feel it worthwhile to send a senior officer to give the BBC an exclusive interview.

Why are the rest of the media excluded if it's standard police procedure?

Why did he plead not guilty to it then? That's what I don't get.

Admitting to a kiss is quite ambivalent.
I don't see how if he admitted to grooming and sexual kissing how he could have pleaded not guilty...makes no sense.
I think he admitted the kiss and texting, with a plan to say it was all innocent stuff, till come the trial he was advised there was too much evidence to convince anyone he was innocent.

This is the bit that is causing the controversy. If the club were only made aware of allegations which Johnson was going to contest then they were entitled to treat him as innocent until proven guilty (with safeguarding measures put in place) but if he had admitted kissing and texting none of what followed makes any sense.
