A19

That's just insane - A19 at Peterlee, posted by the police - its the drifts off the fields that's the problem - you can be following a lorry no bother, and not see the 2" of now until its too late.

I'm trying to convince my missus to tell her work "no". NHS Out Patients dept. Important work, but she's the furthest away out of the whole team. The chances of getting hurt are just way to high now.

There are a few nhs sites getting help from 4 wheel drives to get staff in safely. Might be worth asking

Retweeted Durham Constabulary (@DurhamPolice):

In the last hour alone, there have been 20 traffic collisions on a single stretch of the A19.

We'd like to reiterate our advice that drivers DO NOT make non-essential journeys. Please do not underestimate how treacherous driving conditions are at the moment! Durham Constabulary on Twitter

Durham Constabulary are advising us that they are going to OPEN the A19 southbound at #Easington for HGVs only. They will be escorted down with a gritter in the Cleveland area. Once the HGVs have passed the road will then be CLOSED until further notice.
Have a look at my photo couple posts up mate. Thats the collision that's happened. Took me 2hrs 30minuyes to get to Hartlepool this morning, due to a jack knifed lorry and another lorry done the same on way back.

And I bet a lot of those cars involved were on non essential trips
It's the HGV's that are the problem. Can't handle the conditions and Jack knife, causing collisions and accidents.

Exactly this. The snowfall isn' really a problem, it's the snowdrifts. Been up and down that A19 today and if it' a bit built up, with trees and hedges etc, it's fine. Come to an opening and the wind doesn't half blow the snow across and then it's very dangerous. Back home now thankfully. We must have missed the lorry jack knife near easington by literally 2 or 3 minutes and got through after it.

Doesn't fix 2 of the problems though

1 - Someone else spinning out in front of you and wiping 20 cars out
2 - Having to sit for hours waiting for other accidents to be cleared away

I'd be fine driving her myself (like I did yesterday), but the risk seems silly now.

My daughter thought it was too dangerous to drive to her nhs work today, so she got the bus. If there’s an alternative for your wife other than driving herself she should take it. It’s thirteen miles door to door for my daughter.

If only they’d gone through at 40-50 like I keep reading on here, they’d have been fine.
To be fair most of the A690 north of A183 was doing 60 just now. Just depends where you are. County Durham end is shocking.

Canny dodgy patch of snow just before A690 turn off though to watch out for for anyone still travelling home.

Thing is, you look outside and drive on certain roads and it's fine. Large parts of the A19 are fine and you drive on them and think what's the fuss about. Then there's 1 mile stretches, with no hedges or trees blocking the snow blowing across and it's treacherous.
This.

People thinking that the worst is over and starting to drive like arseholes again, stay safe people
That's the problem really. I've just driven up from Wiltshire after getting snowed off due to the red warning. The traffic was fine down there as the soft (sensible) gits kept off the roads. It wasn't until I got on the A19 that I saw the worst of the conditions and therefore arsehole driving, in terrible conditions with plenty of smashes. Luckily I only got stuck at Peterlee for around 15 minutes.

If a lorry or car loses control you won't get caught in a pile up if you've left a good gap, unless you're overtaking.

Spot on mate, I've done a few miles today and the roads in general are ok. As you say open areas can be lethal and people are getting drawn into a false sense of safety and picking up speed then end up on a stretch of pure slush or ice, dodgy as fuck out there still.

My wife works in Sedgefield, one building on the same area was closed because of the snow, her building open "because they have customers". A lot of selfish people about not taking note of the conditions, the wife didn't make it in today and judging by the reports/photos/videos i've seen of the roads round here, I'm pleased she didn't go to work today. Tractors were pulling HGV's out/off the roads between Trimdon Grange & Wheatley Hill this afternoon............ I somehow doubt the wife had much of a change in a Peugeot 108 with a disability. Sometimes folk need to apply common sense and just put the well-being of their staff first

they'll be fucked if they were actually hgv's because there's a weight limit on that road.

These posts are exactly why I'm not travelling unless I must - I'm fairly confident that I can drive in the snow - but I don't want to sit in a jam for 2 hours because someone else had a crash.

Sadly, the NHS are being pushy with my wife, so I had to drive her in yesterday - but not today thankfully. They want her in tomorrow morning though. FFS

My other half had a training day on Tuesday which she went to, they had to finish it on Wednesday morning despite the impending weather.

She walked in, took her 45 minutes, for the bastards to announce it had been cancelled.

She’s back in tomorrow as well.
