Sunderland then and now

Holy fcuk. I read the messages before I watched the video so I thought I was kind of prepared. I wasn't. It's rare that i have tears rolling down my cheeks but I just lost it when Ian Porterfield was sat there. So many childhood memories. If only I could shake my dads hand like that, he was a MLF but passed away in 69 before my first match. Brilliant post.

I just googled him and he was Billy Hughes' brother and played once for us before being injured and never playing again.
Seriously?
You had to Google John Hughes!
What's the modern generation coming to?🤣
I was surprised as I naively thought all Sunderland fans would recognise all the names of the team to win our last trophy, as I recognise all the team names from the 1937 FA cup winning team even though that was 35 years before I was born.

Mind I had to google John Hughes. I don't remember his single appearance for us ☹️.
Got injured in his first game first us I think. Played for Celtic,Billy's big brother.

I am glad that they included all of the Lads who had taken part in the FA Cup campaign and not just the winning team.

I shall never get over the ITV panel the night before the game saying that Dick Malone was Sunderland's "weakest link" (what a twatish thing to say before a big game like that) . They did Bob Stokoe's job for him though as Dick played the game of his life.

Fortunately (or unfortunately🤔) I’m of an age where I’ve seen them all and Mr Google wasn’t required on this occasion. I also thought it was excellent and somehow got a bit of grit in the eye watching it. 😢😁

Quite clever how they’ve done it, nowt to get emotional about imho though.
It might be an age thing. When you are in your 60s and have recently lost 2 friends, one of the same age and one 9 years younger, it make you realise that you have more time behind you than is left in front of you... And seeing old players meet their younger selves reinforces that point for me.

Live for today, lads and lasses! Life flies by.

In my 60’s , been to 7 funerals in the last year , including my old man , an uncle and close relatives on my wife’s side.

My wife and I were in a taxi that got hit from behind and overturned last year , both got away relatively easily with no serious injuries.

Live for today indeed.
