5th test the oval

If Australia get 2 hours will they chase ?
They'll just go out with aim to keep the scoreboard moving, and if they get to 60 with enough time and wickets in hand they'll probably have a bash

They have the luxury of just playing it ball by ball, no predetermined approach needed
The result is fair whatever happens England have been the most consistent but Australia have won the key battles.
England have failed to finish them off on pretty much every occasion , despite getting themselves into position to.

Multiple times they've got clusters of wickets at the top and middle without rolling the rest.

Or they've batted powerfully but sort of aimlessly, either declaring too early or as in this test, seemingly getting bored or distracted rather than really grinding them into the dirt.

They're lacking an Edge and intensity required to complete the kill. They've done the hard work so many times.

It’s been a cracking but disappointing ashes. Just because we have lost/ not regained them. We could feasibly be 4up.

Edgbaston we didn’t put enough on board - that spell in the gloom Cummins tore crawley and duckett out. (Supposedly we’ve had all the conditions) also hoyed runs away with huge drops and no ball wickets

The absolute suicide at lords with the hook and pulls, bairstow brain fart and dropped catches

Leeds was a good even contest where we pushed home the advantage

Old Trafford dominated from start until last day where we achieved nowt with the ball. The lead we had and the time remaining had there been no rain should’ve seen us home.

This test we have set a good target in theory but that pitch was getting fatter and flatter by the hour. We should’ve set more and we knew it hence coming out to bat with Jimmy yesterday

We’ve taken 86 out of a possible 100(so far) wickets so the bowlers have done a tremendous job often after no rest.
The batters have scored competitive /good runs but it should’ve been more at lords and definitely edgbaston 2nd innings.

The declaration wasn’t the deciding factor in Birmingham it’s been our 4th bowler not chipping in much anderson/Ali in the main

All in all test cricket is alive and well in the uk,India and Australia but that’s scant reward!

Feels like they’ve won it because England have gifted it to them either through silly stupid schoolboy mistakes or poor selections. I’m not having that they’ve been better than us. So bloody frustrating.
I’ve used the terminology before that I think we’ve been worse than them in areas, rather than they’ve been better than us. Obviously strictly it’s the same thing but in a sense it isn’t - we haven’t been beaten by them, we’ve been beaten by ourselves doing loads of stupid things (including selection), and in many ways it’s the most frustrating way to lose a game

Very good post. Sums up the series a lot for me.

Draw vs Australia now pretty much a coin flip
I know that this is going to be very much frowned upon….but….at some point in the England first innings, I looked at the odds on the game and on the spur of the moment I lobbed £4 on an Aussie win at 6/4….and £4 on the Draw at 15/4.
Not a clue why. I wanted England to win and still do.
To be fair I usually put a jinx on teams I bet on….but it doesn’t look like I have this time.

Howay lads….skittle them. It’s only £8 I’ll lose and I will be happy to do so.

I've thoroughly enjoyed this test series. As much as I love cricket the results don't matter to me as much as it does with other sports. Of course I'd have preferred to see England win but I'd rather watch a series like this and take a loss/draw than us bore ourselves to a 1-0, 2-1 win with some not very exciting cricket played

Exactly

Last of the big spenders 😉

just hope the inevitable backlash to bazball dies down quick, ive had more mates who arent cricket fans talk to me about the series than ever before, even more than the WC win in 2019, its made test cricket relevant and gave it a much needed shot in the arm, barring a few errors in judgement and the weather we could just as well be 3-0 up. disappointing we look likely to lose the series but cant complain too much, ive been entertained if nothing else

Given a bit more luck, some better judgement and nicer weather and it could have been 5-0. Australia haven't been out of sight in any of the matches.

i've had similar, ppl from work talking to me about the previous days play even though they openly admit they previously never had any interest in cricket

If Australia come out with Intent to draw England could sneak it.

If they come out and bat with intent it's theirs or a draw without doubt
As long as they get back on...If you think about it...It only takes a couple of overs to take the wickets, if we get an hour or so, they ain't going for it...
I know its pie in the sky, but its been an excellent if disappointing series...Australia simply got pragmatic at the right times, England did what england are are going to do under Stokes...I used to argue against "Bazball"..but I've really enjoyed this series...its simply losing to the Aussies thats sticks in my throat
