3rd Ashes Test - Headingley

Well if England are going to win they're also likely going to have to go through 150+ overs.

Last time they did that was back in 2016, the 5th test against India. Moeen Ali top scored with 146. :eek:

Can't remember the last time they've done that in a second innings though.

This time yesterday we were planning a day in York. Won’t sleep tonight now!
 
England’ batting properly today has made yesterday’s shite even more frustrating. They’ve shown today that they can bat properly if they apply themselves but more often than not they have a brain fart and play a ridiculous shot.

I think they took the view that if they are going to win the key to it is getting through the new ball and they needed to go into that period of play with as many wickets in hand as possible. Scoring another 20 or 30 runs would have been nice but maybe not at the risk of going in 5 down. Tricky one!
 
Well I’m sunburnt as fuck but that was 2 great days of sport for different reasons.

Superb resolve in this innings from Root and Denly. Still think we haven’t got a hope in hells chance, but I’m buzzing to see us actually battling and actually batting like a test match team.

Plus the Aussies bowled extremely well imo, there was nothing in the wicket, but their bowlers give nothing at all away.

It is, but I don't agree with the general view on here that a 2.5 an over blockathon is the way to win it. They need to score 204 before they get seven unplayable balls, which they will with the Aussie attack.

True the unplayable balls are most likely to come during the new ball period. Having 7 wickets in hand going into that period is probably more important than striving to get more runs and taking risks. I still have them 90 percent though because even after the new ball they are giving very little away.

Sorry but that's just weird logic. If it was the case that only 7 unplayable balls were the only thing could get you out you'd be right. But it isnt. Nor is is it how this England team have primarily gotten out. They've primarily gotten out by giving their wickets away playing stupid shots and not playing the circumstances. The current circumstances being they have *two days* to bat.

In order to win you have to stay in and given England have proven they struggle to do even that then that simply has to be the focus. If they stay in for a day and a half of course they will get 204 runs. No question. The question is whether they can.

Will it be incredibly difficult to do that and win? Absolutely. Would they even stand a chance if they tried to do anything else? Is there any evidence what so ever to suggest they can ride their luck by playing shots and get 204 runs? No.

Faced with the choice of very unlikely and not all likely, you take the former.

Possibly aye, even if it actually isn't, if Root goes before Lunch then it is.

Would have loved Denly to have at least have faced some of the new ball before going. Stokes needs to put in a top 5 career innings tomorrow, Root needs to double his score. Both of those happen then we're on...

The media had already penciled in 1-1 heading to OT after they found out Smith wasn't playing.

Then when England were bowled out for 67 the BBC headline read England's Ashes hopes all but gone. With pundits falling over themselves saying this is the day we lost the Ashes etc.

Then when England chase down 359, the usual OTT predictions ENGLAND HAVE MOMENTUM! CAN'T SEE ENGLAND NOT WINNING THE ASHES NOW! AUSTRALIA PSYCHOLOGICALLY WONT COMEBACK FROM THIS! 3-1!

And then I expect Australia probably to still win 1 of the last 2 tests and regain it anyway. Our press can't stop acting like idiots, one day we're invincible because we had Archer knocking Aussies over with 95mph deliveries and the next day we're the worst England side ever.
