Personally, I don't think there's a lot in it between Woakes and Sam - especially once the ball gets old and loses its swing. I think Woakes can hit the line and length more, while Sam is a bit more skillful and clever - but both look pretty toothless once the shine goes.
And I absolutely fancy Sam with the bat far more than Woakes, especially if we're under pressure.

If Woakes took the new ball, I'd have said right call - but since Archer took it, I'd have gone with Sammy.


Agree with your last bit though

I think Woakes is a much superior bowler. Curran is not more skilful and you'll be able to count on one hand the amount of five-for's he'll take throughout his test career. I think he's garbage tbh and gets a lot of arrogance wickets, where people underestimate him. If they concentrate, he's harmless.

I do really rate him as a batsman though. Other than Stokes I'd probably pick him as number one Englishman to bat for my life - just because he has character, guts and bats really really well under pressure.

Yeah the way some of the press were talking as if it was already 1-1 heading into Old Trafford when they heard the news Smith was out, probably galvanised the Aussies.

England should've batted first also, in the two tests so far both sides have looked vulnerable batting 4th, who's batted first has had the advantage.
