2ND ASHES TEST: LORDS

Can’t see us winning with the time left ... but can see us collapsing

Haway the draw
Root shouldnt open, he is our best batsman. He is batting too high as it is.

There is no solution to England’s top order problems imo the test quality just isn’t there

No he is not, he has been stuck opening the batting at start of his test careeer in the high pressure of the Ashes when he doesn’t even open for his county!!

That’s the joke, that he has been put in that position, if selected should have been batting at 6.

Knew this would happen and people who start having a go, it’s totally unfair on the lad!
Fair point. In reality he should be coming in down the order to try and score a few quick runs but he will never be an opener as long as im alive in test cricket. He plays at everything

Roy is simply not a test batsmen and certainly not as opener. Theres nothing wrong with that either, not every one is. Its unfair on him and the rest of the team though

It’s crazy imo throwing in a lad with no experience at test cricket or as a opener thus destroying his confidence of a very good player while a experienced test player and previous opener is in the side.

It’s not ideal but with current set up and personal best option.

He's played 116 limited overs internationals though, whilst I agree that the demands of an Ashes test is different, he should have enough experience in the bank to know better in terms of his shot selection.

I agree that he's not a Test opener, but no-one can write him off as a middle order batsman until he's played in the middle order. Root was very average as an opener - imagine if he'd been dropped as a result and not given the chance to play at 4/5?

Also it was all so predictable so the selectors need to have a proper look in the mirror at how to select for test cricket, rather than make it the one day team

That’s what happen when your best batsman is in far too early. Great selection putting Roy in at one just causes problems further on. Not surprised to see Australian batting a canny bit today.

Except root was also outstanding in first class cricket. Roy hasnt, nothing wrong with it, but he is an outstanding one day player, just not cut for the legwork of tests
