Tim Wellock explains a bit more in the link below, it appears Durham exceeded the salary cap by about £30,000.

Plunkett, Harmison and Blackwell all have a year left on their contracts

The difference being that Blackwell and Plunkett want to play cricket.

Correct, they will both leave which is fair enough.

Harmison will continue to bleed Durham dry, he hasn't really cared for Durham for a long time now.

Its crazy we have broke the salary cap considering we cant afford an Overseas batsman in the 4 day format!!!!!!!! Ridiculous infact.

Not really, the salary cap was put in place in 2010, most of the big earners were all ready at the club then and playing well.

At the time it was a no brainer to re sign these players as they'd just won back to back championships, no one could have forseen the drastic drop in form from some of the championship winning side.

Add to the fact Colly was dropped from the England set up sooner than anybody was expecting and Durham had to pick up his wage, or someone else would have.

It's not that Durham can't afford an overseas player, or even a top English player, they have just reached the limit in what the ECB will allow them to spend on wages.

Sometimes things are not as straightforward as they first appear.

I've just seen that Graham Onions has been awarded an incremental contract with England next year, well deserved too.

I hope this helps Durham with the salary cap problem.

Is anyone out of contract at the end of the season? and what were we doing signing Myburgh who's never played yet contributed to the wage scenario?

Myburgh was on about £200 a week with bonuses for playing for the 1st team on a game by game basis, hardly likely to make a dent in the total years salary.

Although it does sound like a bit of a mess, let's not get carried away. A 2.5 point deficit at the start of the season is hardly a big deal. With the squad we will have next season I expect us to win the league by over 25 points never mind 2.5.

We said that this season though and to be fair if we had been even half decent with the bat over the first 7 or 8 games, we would have done.

We still have a ridiculously strong side on paper, but we need to perform better with the bat, cut out the off the pitch issues and dare I say, sort out a track that you can score more than 200 runs on in the first innings.

Why extend Liam Plunketts contract last year? How is Harmisons contract justified? Why squander all that cash on T20 failures?

You can't get away from the fact that all of these 3 prioritised getting a good overseas batsman who would be available in all formats all season long.

Plunkett was a regular Lion and was called up to the one-day squad last year, when Harmison signed that deal he was the most feared bowler in the CC and the rewards for getting to the final of the T20 are huge.

It's a piece of piss to have 20/20 hindsight but none of those decisions were particulary outrageous at the time.

I agree with this.

Shit happens.

I think with an incremental contract we pay GOs wages when he's with us but if he's called up we get 100% compensation back from the ECB?

Hopefully Plunkett and Blackwell will leave of their own accord and who knows about Harmison. No doubt Ramside GC will be enjoying his company.

Re: Eh!?

He was shit and was playing limited overs games as a batsman at times because his bowling was so shocking?

He signed a new deal towards the end of last season IIRC, a season that was pretty much done in by injury, the winter before he was away with the Lions and called up for the ODI team.

It's not a bad decision to give a new contract to a player on the verges of the England one day team.

Harmy's not going any where, it's his benefit next year and he's decided to have his cake and eat it, at Durham's expense.

Bloody unbelievable that. We have went up like a hot air balloon since he was shifted out of the place. I hope he doesn't pass a hat anywhere near me, the idle bugger.

Or it was a bad decision by the ODI selectors picking Plunkett. He hasn't been a regular 1st choice for Durham for a number of years and is also injury prone. He's been fit for the majority of this season and has not been worthy of a place in the CC side.

I repeat, He was shit and was playing limited overs games as a batsman at times because his bowling was so shocking? IIRC it was laughable that he got called up for England Lions due to how bad he had been with Bat & Ball for Durham for most of the season.

It's as if this is coming from someone on the DCCC board or some kind of Durham Spin Doctor or PR officer?

Injury mostly. 2011 was pretty much ruined and he was, indeed, rubbish.

You can look back now after a disgraceful 2012 and say it was a bad decision but at the time you can see why, and I don't recall anyone on here kicking up a fuss about it. Durham and the England selectors got him wrong, it happens.

That last bit belongs on the PF.

Harmison will happily bleed Durham dry as he has for 2 years now.
