Sri Lanka are lucky, going into a shell rarely works out well
England are lucky herath wasn't out

That's the fifth time England have drawn needing one more wicket to win, four of them in last nine years

what a shock

now if that had happened v india, no review and england won, imagine the uproar from the bcci.

unlucky england but both they and the lankys wasted approx 20 overs of play, in a game with no weather problems

f***ing hell mate, do you ever do anything but criticise and moan.

29 wickets in 5 sessions?

Can see Sri Lanka only losing 1 wicket in the first session today. Then will get about 450 runs

I should have bet what I said!

Instead I put £100 on Sri Lanka to win yesterday. Then realised they wernt going to win so put £200 on the draw to win my £100 back. Safe to say I shit my pants in that last over ha

Aye because that was a poor test match, what was I saying about exciting draws and you said it is about context

What context was that then??

That was test match cricket at its very very best

The context of the games you provided were England surviving following weather delays, against top opposition in their own back yards or in Ashes series.

This was a game where England had faced criticism for being too safe, too conservative and too rigid prior to the game. They started to show signs of improvement in the first innings with the positive intent shown. However, when it came to the crunch and a big decision was due, England played it safe.

With a lead of 350, England should have declared last night, had a go at their top order and forced a result. They didnt. And not for the first time. Yes, the game may have had an exciting climax but that came about as a result of our bowlers excellence - an excellence that should have been backed by the captain. I said this yesterday, as did others, and have been proven correct.

IMO, that game was a moral victory for Sri Lanka as England's were in the games you mentioned in your previous post

Yeah but you were basically saying that games like this are not good for test cricket.

Couldn't be more wrong like, will go down in history that one.

Brilliant viewing, better than any game at the World Cup.

I very much doubt that. Maybe in Sri Lanka but if it goes down in history here it will be for Cook not declaring - same as when the Windies were 9 down at the end of the final day under Strauss.

Poor captaincy yet again. He needs to take some risks does Cook

That is rich coming from you

:lol::lol::lol: jsdftm04 thought you might like to see this

One of the most moronic posters on PF calling me a moaner

I never moan, grow up man, I always defend the Sunderland players if you are starting this route.

You clearly no absolutely nothing about cricket.

Exactly this.

It appears this board is split between wet blankets and winners

Bloody hell that was a close run thing. Cook should have told Ballance to accelerate earlier last night so they could have had at least 15 minutes extra at them.

Exactly sentiment and collecting baubles got in the way of the team

bumble knows nothing about cricket

: It was a classic. in at it's very best...”Sadly 'Englishness' crept in . Should have bowled last night

neither does shane warne

England would have won that test match with time to spare, if they declared last night & everyone knows it. 390 runs off 90 overs, please !

Warne has it spot on. Should have given them 96 overs to knock off 350. If they had done on the last day of a Test match against an attack that includes two very good last day bowlers then you take your hat off to them and say well played.

People say it ended up as a great advert for Test cricket but I disagree. With an earlier declaration both sides would have had an increased chance of winning and that very possibly would have produced an even more exciting climax.

I think back to Headingley 01. Gilchrist declared leaving England 315 to win on the last day. He backed his bowlers to do the job and gave England a sniff. Ultimately Australia lost and missed out on a whitewash. However, it was an outstanding final day, one of the greatest, and despite losing Gilchrist received a lot of praise for it.

That wont happen with the mindset of the decision makers in the England set up and I personally feel that is a shame.

Anyway, Ive laboured my point so I'll leave it there. In terms of individual performances there are a lot of positives

Don't agree at all, they could of been chasing a much lower total today and would of batted with much more intent.

Not as black and white as you are making out at all.
Even so 390 was always at least 50 high, but more importantly a few overs last night would have been worth having at them. That ball that kept flat to Broad last night would have had the bowlers rating to have a go at a tired top order. And they'd have been more aggressive and probably lost wickets sooner.

Didn't snack of ambition to win the game is all I'm saying.

All down to cook being negative. Those that thought we were right to bat on will now realise how wrong they were

earlier declaration would have seen sri lanka bat in a different way. psychology. still england have played well in patches and i feel, good weather in leeds and we will win

Half hour so before the close yday is all people were asking for. It was a no brainer.

;)
