1st TEST - England v Sri Lanka

You can also increase your chances of losing.

Especially on a dead pitch, with 2 utterly world class batsmen and no spinner

Praise for a signal of intent? Are you a spurs fan?

What kind of message does it send to Anderson, Broad, Jordan and Plunkett when with a 350 lead on the board, having seen their opening bowler move the ball all over the shop with the new ball first up, the skipper decides to increase the lead to a total of 390? Hardly backing them to the hilt is it?

Im not, and have not at any stage, suggested chucking Sri Lanka in with a lead of 290 and a day and a half to knock it off. However, it was pathetically conservative to not put Sri Lanka in last night with a lead of 350ish.

There have been some good performances in this Test match, very good in fact, but the decision making by the captain and staff at the back end of the test match has been dull and provides very little hope that things will improve significantly in the future.

earlier declaration would have seen sri lanka bat in a different way. psychology. still england have played well in patches and i feel, good weather in leeds and we will win

see above.

As an aside, we would not have lost this game had we declared with 30-40 runs less on the board. You can increase your chances of winning a game by given the opposition a chance of also winning the game.

Had England done it and lost I firmly believe the vast majority of pundits and posters on here would have praised England for having a go and sending a signal of intent.

You don't know that, 10 overs last night they might have been chasing 260/270 today and then it's a completely different game.

Well you couldn't be more wrong. If we'd have set them 320/330 off 100 with this attack, pitch and opposition then the pitchforks would have been out. And rightly so.

Aye because that was a poor test match, what was I saying about exciting draws and you said it is about context

What context was that then??

That was test match cricket at its very very best

Well said mate

Test cricket > world cup footy

Not according to some on here! Apparently he has to explain to his son why they have watched 5 days and got no result!
