1950 All Divisions Results 8th April 1950

A bit of trivia ... South Shields finished seventh in Div 3 North in season 1929-30. After that the club was transferred to Gateshead - in similar fashion to Wimbledon becoming MK Dons. Falling attendances at the club's Horsley Hill ground was the main reason and yet, when they were first elected to Division 2 in 1914, Shields attracted remarkable crowds. For example, in 1920-21, when Shields finished eighth, above Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds, and Wolves, they averaged 16,860. That same season, Sunderland who finished twelfth in Division One averaged 27,000 - Boro, finishing eighth averaged 23,360.
Correction - Shields elected to Div 2 in 1919 not 1914 !
16,860 is very impressive - I had no idea, or of the move to Gateshead.
I wonder if there was a lot of fans of both Sunderland and Shields attending the other clubs home games when their main side was away from home.
Were those crowds so high because Tommy Lawton, the great England forward, had signed for them ? In those days there was little difference in wages between the Divisions.

After that Sunderland's win shown on Facebook, only 5 games remained. The next 3 were lost - the Championship was more or less thrown away.
If only they had the #TilTheEnd slogan back in 1950.

We should have won the league in 1950. It would have been great to have at least one post-war title.

New Brighton also had a team in the early 20th century called New Brighton Tower FC which played in the second division for three seasons until 1901. This was named after the New Brighton tower, apparently a tower similar to the Blackpool tower.

The second New Brighton played in the football league from 1923-51 when they failed re-election and were replaced by Workington!

Durham and South Shields also had teams in the lower leagues pre WW2. Not sure when they left the league system.
We all know the reason Gateshead dropped out of the league.
Durham were in football league 1921-28 as we're Ashington in the 1920's, the Northernmost team ever in the league. South Shields had a gate of 19000 as late as 1958 v York City in 2nd round fa cup

Where was Durham’s ground?
Hey,I'm old but not that old
But

Since it was origionally formed, the club has occupied five different grounds. The first of these being at Garden House Park (almost where County Hall stands now), where they stayed for one season only, moving immediately to Kepier Heughs, a larger field near to old Ferens Park ground. Here they stayed for four seasons. The clud then moved to Holiday Park (named after the late Alderman T.W. Holiday, a former mayor of the city), this ground was situated next to the large gasometer along Framwellgate Waterside in the City, where the club stayed until 1938. The club's fourth ground was acquired when they reformed in 1950 and was named after the late Alderman H.C. Ferens, who was for many years prior to his death in 1975, President of the club, and who was agenerous benefactor in connection with the perchase of the land. Ferens Park was probably one of the most attractive grounds in the Northern League, being set in rural surroundings and its facilities included a comfortable clubhouse, covered stand and floodlights.

I didn't know we were that close to winning the title.

2 points would have been enough (1 nee good due to GD and the game you'd look at is losing at home to Man City who got relegated. Look at the crowd drop off anarl for the last 2 home games, the fickle lot and no doubt the empty seat & early leavers brigade were losing their rags in the pubs and clubs! Smashed the 4 Turkish teams after anarl

5 points seperate the top 7 !
All clubs suffered a huge end of season drop if nowt to play for. Within weeks of Sunderland's record 75,000 crowd for a quarter-final cup-tie against Derby, league crowds were around 14,000

4 points separate top 7 isn't it?

Aye crowds fluctuated loads in the past and my post was a tongue in cheek comment about today's fans who expect a full stadium and moan about the empty seats.

Even during our Reid era, the stadium size allowed natural crowd fluctuation as it was around 10,000 peak to low. There is no perfect stadium size but as some fans are finding out now, if demand exceeds supply then ticket prices just continue to go up as their loyalty is taken for granted and other fans also miss out.

I worked with an old-timer (someone 60 seemed ancient then) who only went to Roker when the opposition was modest, he could park easily and wasn't packed in like a sardine on the terraces !
