I think some of us know the reason why Gateshead joined the league, especially those with an interest in Shields !Durham and South Shields also had teams in the lower leagues pre WW2. Not sure when they left the league system.
We all know the reason Gateshead dropped out of the league.

What is the story there - did they replace Shields?I think some of us know the reason why Gateshead joined the league, especially those with an interest in Shields !
LolBaldness?
A bit of trivia ... South Shields finished seventh in Div 3 North in season 1929-30. After that the club was transferred to Gateshead - in similar fashion to Wimbledon becoming MK Dons. Falling attendances at the club's Horsley Hill ground was the main reason and yet, when they were first elected to Division 2 in 1914, Shields attracted remarkable crowds. For example, in 1920-21, when Shields finished eighth, above Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds, and Wolves, they averaged 16,860. That same season, Sunderland who finished twelfth in Division One averaged 27,000 - Boro, finishing eighth averaged 23,360.What is the story there - did they replace Shields?
I only was aware that the visitors voted Gateshead out as they wanted people in Gateshead to support them instead.
Lol
Wiki says their 35k average that season is their highest historically43,906 at Notts County in Division 3 South
Were those crowds so high because Tommy Lawton, the great England forward, had signed for them ? In those days there was little difference in wages between the Divisions.Wiki says their 35k average that season is their highest historically
Were they a massive club once over? Though D3 South doesn't indicate so
After that Sunderland's win shown on Facebook, only 5 games remained. The next 3 were lost - the Championship was more or less thrown away.Another win that season and we’d have been champions.
They had the 17th highest that season but I saw it was a one off and Wiki tells you why.Wiki says their 35k average that season is their highest historically

Ohhh. InterestingThey had the 17th highest that season but I saw it was a one off and Wiki tells you why.
Notts paid £20,000, then the British transfer record, to sign England international forward Tommy Lawton. Lawton's presence resulted in a significant increase in Notts County's crowds.
