“Good evening Newcastle”

I remember seeing him down there. He'd bought some of those daft spinners from Bungalow Cafe and was having a nightmare. Everyone else was catching but him. Anyway, I loaned him an ABU Koster and he couldn't stop catching. Fish scales all over those baggy pants before he climbed back on the tour bus at the Blockyards.
He wrote Hunky Dory about a massive John Dory he caught from the 3rd arch on the South Pier. Me uncle saw him land it and said it was foul hooked the jammy bastard. He caught it on runnydown, the Thin White Duke's favourite bait.

Black Star is about the legend that is Gary Bennett (my first footballing hero).

I'm sure his inability to catch, before my intervention, was the inspiration for Under Pressure.

Saw him down the Rat House a couple of years later (when he returned my Koster) and he was telling me about some of the amazing meals that his landlady was conjuring up at Jean's Residential Guest House. It was as if a lightbulb had just popped into his head when he was telling me. He pushed half a packet of rag my way and said he had to be somewhere.

I was on the back of the jolly bus and when it did the sharp turn onto Chester road, I felt some dickhead bump into me as he slid down the long back seat. I looked up and it was David Bowie, he said he was off to Ty Mcgurks to get some new boots and a trophy.

I was there awful show by Bowie
Disagree. Thought he put on a good show.
I liked the Glass Spider album, some crackin tracks.
It's bizzare how Bowie is so sycophantically held in such high asteem by so many. Fair enough he had some great songs in 70s and early 80s but Ive seen him live twice at Sunderland & Newcastle Arena and he was horrific. Big Country blew him away. The most self indulgent set lists I have ever seen. Tony Hadley puts on a much better show.

His output from 1984 onwards and pre 70s was pretty shit too apart from a slight return to form on his last album.
Plenty wud disagree.

you're off ya chump mate
😂😂😂😂😂 Imagine getting wound up about this
@gipetto I vaguely remember the article in NME, remember this was around the time when the Sunderland illuminations were massive, Bowie was a big fan IIRC.

Billy Hardy was his hero and an inspiration for a song.
In Sunlan ! ?
Aye, in Broadway school. He used to sneak into the playground wearing a borrowed blazer and go and hang out in smokers corner and all the lads in their Wham tops used to line up and wait for their turn.

Bowie never came back to Sunderland and this lame in-joke to say that he did is even worse than the gig he played at Roker Park.

The gig was atrocious.
Back then when he said what he said, it was funny. If he did it now days he'd be slated for it.

Did he ever go to Newcastle to stay? You know what that lot up the road are like, they'll be seething if he visited little ol Sunderland a few times and didnt bother with their toon.
