Recommend a film people may not have seen

When I was still in school, I was flicking through the channels one night and found a film called Lawn Dog, think it was on BBC2, no breaks helps when you’re impatient. But aye,I don’t think I’d heard of Sam Rockwell before this, and I really enjoyed the story and its old dynamic. Young Mischa Barton plays across him, I find Sam Rockwell so easy to watch now.

- most people will have heard/seen Cinema Paradiso, but a couple of films by same director (Tornatore) are worth checking out: Malena (2000) with Monica Belluci in lead role, and The Legend of 1900 (1998) with Tim Roth - both films have great soundtracks by Morricone

- Ragtime (1981) even won Oscars when it came out but hasn't been seen on tv or film channels since? - also has last ever performance by James Cagney.

- The Spook who Sat by the Door (1973) was a controversial blaxploitation film released at time by United Artists, and then vanished from circulation shortly afterwards... somebody then destroyed all prints, but they found a print back in 2004 stored under a different name, and it was re-released on dvd and became a cult film.

- various spaghetti westerns by Corbucci (Django) and Leone (Dollar trilogy) that never get shown anymore as tv channels keep repeating those with Clint or other A-listers? - check out The Great Silence (1968) or My Name is Nobody (1973) as two great examples
Something underrated or less well known, that you think is worth a watch.

My go:

2010

The 1984 follow up to the undisputed Kubrick classic 2001. It suffers by comparison to the first film but I have a real soft spot for it. It was one of the first proper sci fi films I ever saw, and it has a real humanity and depth to it.

Not everyone agrees with the idea of explaining so much of what went on in the first film, or whether to have a sequel at all, but I think it stands on its own as a worthy film.

A great supporting cast including Helen Mirren and John Lithgow, and the late great Roy Scheider in the lead giving the film some real oomph.

a great film... I had this on an old V2000 (not VHS!) tape back in the 80's. I can't remember ever seeing it get shown on tv in decades?

The 9th Configuration.

brilliant forgotten cult film by same person who wrote The Exorcist... also had very strong ensemble cast, and interesting fact for any viewers:
There are five different versions of this film, with various running times from 99 up to 140 minutes. Director William Peter Blatty disowned all versions except one: his approved cut runs 118 minutes and is the version that was originally released theatrically in the USA (1980?) - This version is available on DVD.

The onion field is a great film, and based on a great book (and a true story). Joseph Wambaugh should be more well known than he is.

The Onion Field is indeed a great film, but back in the 70/80's they filmed a lot of Joseph Wambaugh books... The New Centurions (1972) with Stacey Keach and George C Scott is well worth checking out, while his biggest cinema hit was probably The Choirboys (1977) but I didn't really rate that one as a film
