There are loads of mouthy kids attaching themselves to the football but mouthy kids is all they are.
The old BCF lot weren't interested for whatever reason. 5 or 6 were up town but didn't bother with the match, few were on hols, etc. Very similar when the Mags were over (friendly few seasons ago). Mags turned up as well - about 30 of them took the Rambler, not a Carlisle lad in sight.
Carlisle aren't very active these days...Sheff Wed away was one and there was bother when Millwall were up towards end of 08/09 season (I think). A load of jocks (a lot Hibs) joined up with Millwall.

i rmemeber about 5 carlisle lads (older) sat outside and they were given 5 minutes to leave or get their heads kicked in so ofcourse they left. bastards then went round the corner and tried to pick a fight with a group of 15 year old sunderland

Sounds like a bloke I was talking to over here few seasons ago in pre-season. Carlisle didn't want to know that day btw.
I'm surprised Carlisle hasn't been mentioned more on here. The 1 or 2 'lads' I know reckon it was just the sheer numbers of Sunderland who were up for it that made them a handful. They talk fondly of the cup match at Roker when they had to hide under cars at the garage outside the ground to avoid being lifted!

We were all over their place before the match and there was no sign of them, they did try to mount summat after the match while we were having a bevy outside that Walkabout but it only lasted a couple of minutes if that.

No, I can remember it happening. It was at the far end of the pitch from us, we were in the covered home end that day. Im sure it happened not long after Oxford had scored.
oxford was a good away day we arrived about 7-30 am had a footy match in the street till shops opened ,we steamed a offy and took about 15 bottles of cheap wine which tasted shite we later abducted 2 oxford fans and took them to a pub and invited them to drink said wine while we bought beer later they climbed out of the toilet windows to get away ....was nothing malicious before the tut tut brigade start, more a daft laugh... etc.i dont recall the keeper incident as i like a fair few were in their end which we had half of .a good day for that decade....

TBH, the only times I have ever had a direct confrontations over football is by fellow Sunderland fans. 1) At a home match a couple seasons back, and 2) In The Chesters. Goes to prove there are arseholes amongst every club, and to be honest, I think of both incidents (unprovoked by me) when I hear the 'best fans in the world' stuff peddled. Ohh well....

The main point of my post. I lived in Sheffield for 5 years and went to a shedload of away games (largely on my own) around the period of 2001 to 2006. I worked with one of the main lads in the BBC at the time and ended up being drafted in for a few games for a Sunday league team which was around half BBC or ex-BBC. I ended up playing a season and a half for them actually. Anyways, talk invevitably got round to firms and stuff. I confess I have never knowingly even drank or know any of Seaburn, but their points from the outside chime with a few posters. Like NUFC funnily enough, SAFC were looked at as having huge numbers and capable of mixing it with the best, but with rank bad organisation. Lad concerned named SAFC v Blades at Roker 90/91 was one of the best rucks he's had! Also said 'we' used the tightly crammed streets and Roker effectively....I saw someone else on the board mentioned Blades v SAFC at Bramall Lane, the boozer that was thrashed was on London Road IIRC... Very much Blades territory.

Also, Riveria mate, for what its worth I think you're one of the most informative posters on the board. If anyone ever levels at "you're not a real supporter" shite at me (bearing in mind my location, and I haven't been to game this decade!) I know in my heart I am SAFC, and I know I served my time in the Third Division and the old Second Division. Followed the lads to easily 25+ grounds away from home and must have been to 100's of home games......I risked a few kickings in the process. Example, Derby away (Poom goal).... I nearly got knacked at Sheffield train station. Sheffield United v Cardiff same day.... two mobs of 250+ up for it and me in casual gear (I am not a casual, but I'd never wear a shirt on my own on an away day) walking past two baying mobs. Literally walked between the two firms given my own police escort - Sheffield copper, "bloody hell, Sunderland, what the blodday 'ell are ya doing 'ere son?" :-P

Final thing..... My dad told me the story once of Sunderland and Leeds fans clashing by chance on the M1.... Days before mobile phones etc, and a sheer chance meeting at a service station. My old man said they had to close the M1 for an hour leading to huge tailbacks and it made the national news or sommit... Must have been mid-70's... Anyone shed any light?

The motorway battle was the season we got relegated, a squad of Leeds bricked a couple of our coaches on the way back from Norwich 76/77 season the lads in the second coach forced the driver to stop and ran across the motorway into the service area and battered the fuck out of Leeds and wrecked their coaches.
Yer Da's right it was on the national news and in the national newspapers.

I know a few lads who were on the coach that had its windows put out they said there was hell on for quite a while before ob showed up ...small point dont think it was norwich away we played as leeds were playing the mags that day i think tho not sure it was hull away 8-)

Was sure it was Norwich but as has been said before yer memory plays tricks and it was a long time ago.

It was after Hull away, about 1977. Sunderland had a huge following at Hull that day, 10 - 12,000. A convoy of coaches were heading home up the A1, when a couple of coach loads of Leeds were returning from Newcastle. The Leeds fans had stopped off at the services and spotted the Sunderland buses heading north and decided it would be a good idea to brick them. One of the Sunderland buses was damaged and pulled up, closely followed by another. Leeds got battered and indeed it was national news.

We also made national news first game of the season away to Chelsea a couple of years later. Sunderland fans were put on the tube after the game, the tube pulled into the next station and was attacked by Chelsea fans armed with scaffolding from some building work that was going on nearby.

I wouldn't want to contradict the last few lads who've posted but, although the story is almost complete, I'd like to throw my hat into the ring with this.

I believe it was after the Hull match, as was said, and there'd been a bit of trouble as usual at Boothferry Park. Sunderland were passing The Little Bistro cafe on the A1 and Leeds had stopped off on their way south.

All the rest is accurate and it did make the national news, they interviewed the owner who showed the cameras around the cafe which was totally wrecked. Leeds had tried to shelter in it after they realised they were going to be battered.

We were in the Sappers at the next home match and some lads came round taking a collection for the cafe owner. We put in 'cos we thought it was unlucky on the bloke. We stopped off on the way back to Mansfield and told him while we had a bacon sarnie.

It was an interesting chat and he saw the funny side which we thought was mint. Ever since then we've always nodded towards the cafe when we passed, remembering the Sunderland fans but particularly the bus drivers who ordered everyone off to get the Leeds 8-)

Wouldn't happen these days would it?

Aye that was it the Little Bistro, for some reason I thought it was the convoy on it's way back from Norwich.
Drink and Drugs :-?

That was the day one of our lads picked up his nickname which we still use. I've told the story before so I'll cut it short.

Our minibus was coming away from the ground, got bricked, I pulled up and we chased them. Glen, from Clipstone, cornered one lad who asked not to be hit as he'd already been beaten up before the match.

Glen whacked him anyway and earned the name 'Glen the Meciless' 8-)

He's also known as 'Glon' 'cos he got a Sunderland tattoo when he was pissed and gave the artist the name as Sundereland which is still on his shoulder

phew thanks for that. it happened just after they scored a screamer, he got on the pitch thumped their goalie who was poleaxed and then he started on the full back, he was a big lad, i can remember it vividly.

That Hull game that's been mentioned, was that the one when we filled the big terrace on the side and had a few goes at getting in their end ?
Can anyone remember a Ginger Hull lad getting on the pitch and coming over and having a go ?
I was near the back but when everyone surged forward to get at him ( about 5,000 !!!!!) I ended up about 20 yards down the terracing and lost me shoe:lol:,
Mad.

Some good posts on here lads.
I mainly went to away games on my own, so know how dodgy it was getting home on the trains.Especially when i was travelling south!

Never saw much bother when i had season ticket at the SOl, but maybe cos we were straight home in the car after, and didn,t get a chance to have too many beforehand.

I know a few dodgy, Chelsea old boys, down here who have said they had a lot of bother when facing us years back.

My brother got slashed (Nearly 20 stitches) years back at Coventry,so have a massive hatred for them ever since.

our bus got bricked last time i went there when reidy was in charge of them. all tried to get off the bus but the driver sped off like fuck

coventry dont seem to like us mind, only seen us play them a few times and i can think of a few different incidents

There was a photo in the papers of the ginger lad, long hair and a beard, charging our side. We were near the front and he came out of their end like a madman. Lucky for him he was scuppered by the police.

I reckon that was also the day the police brought the horses onto the terraces to push us back.

Under Peter Reid when we got beat 3-2, losing 3-0 and scored two late goals, had 3 mini buses on, walking back to buses after game Coventry came out of nowhere to have a pop, as soon as they saw we werent moving you could tell straight away there bottles had gone, windmilling commenced which soon saw the sky blues leg off into the distance..... been there a few times and in all honesty other than that havent seen much off them. There was a large boozer just opposite the away end up on the left hand side IIRC, few gobshites used to hang about there! This was highfield road not the new one.
