Mercia BlackCat - An obsolete place. Fair enough. Picture doesn't grab me. But you have improved a not very interesting photo 100% with the panoramic shape and thick black frame. It stands out on the archive page. (Thanks for the archive page AB22EasyTiger, it is a useful addition, but not all the photographs are there.)

Just a minor point PB, it's more an obsolete construction than an obsolete place being a Celtic hillfort. The ramparts were originally much higher but 2,000 years of weathering after being abandoned.....

The pits are a major point of contention regarding their opriginal purpose so I suppose mainly of interest to a more specialist historical audience.

Still a shite photo though.

APB - for me, the actual subject is a bit lost in the post-production effects. Just personal, but I prefer naturalistic shots.

Thanks for the feedback JP, as ever i'll bare it in mind

But my picture of the month and the one available vote is given to APB.

That old fashioned swing hidden away in a shed/garage definitely meets the theme, I doubt many of us will ever see one of them. I also like the black and white, adds to the
obsoleteness. Only criticism, very small one, As the picture is grainy I would have had a solid frame, that is all. So my picture of the month, and sole vote, goes to APB.

Yeah that probably would look better, cheers peach ;)

Roger for me. A beautifully composed shot, very clear that a lot of care and skill went into it.

Just to wade in on the debate about meeting the theme, tbh I think that every entry meets the theme. The theme should be open to a degree of interpretation, and should be viewed accordingly.

What is the point of having a theme if you don't have to meet it?:)

Agree with this, it seems some people are saying you have to have a totally literal interpretation of their view of a word.

As for the criticism of my photo, totally agreed, the look and feel of the photo I wanted was the NCB (National Coal Board) jacket no longer used in the back of a cluttered garage. I like the fact that there's a crucifix in shot, (as that could fit MY interpretation of this month's theme: religous artefacts) but I agree that it's just a mess and I didn't have the skills or equipment needed to get the shot I wanted.

If there was multiple voting this month, I would have voted for you and Cartman, as well as Roger.

I know your shot wasn't the most technically perfect or whatever, but I really liked it. Something quite powerful about that old NCB jacket at the back of that very busy garage. Great title too.

True, but I think every entry does. Your shot (very nice work btw :-D ) shows obsolete coins - i.e. a very direct answer to the theme - but every shot this month makes some comment on obsolesce. For me, Roger's shot talks of the march of technology, janiep's feels like an abstraction on the decline of Empire, Cartman's shot makes me think about an obsolete form of punishment (and the debate therein), Crazylegs shot talks to me about an obsolete industry / culture etc. My shot was an answer to the obsolete theme that was very personal to me - though I totally agree with your overall criticisms fwiw.

I'm not saying I'm right and you're wrong, I hope that's clear. I think it's very interesting how people subjectively interpret these shots, that's part of the fun of it imo.

Some excellent observations on what is obsolete.
For me Cartman's `Gallows` is spine-chillingly stark

Not really

It's a debate so each person puts forward their interpretation of the word.

It's no good putting forward someone else's is it?

Aye, I don't take anything to heart, I just listen, watch and hopefully learn. And I'm gobby enough about other's photography. :p

I think Roger is a very good photographer, BUT I am truly hoping that he doesn't win this month because how can you have a picture of a record deck that you can currently buy (or similar) winning when the theme is "obsolete" ?:)

I sort of see your point, but just because you can still purchase something does not make it obsolete. You can still buy Half crowns and I am sure many of them are trading at a much higher value than originally pressed. If you look at then nothing is obsolete as everything still has a use (we could still use flint axes if we chose to) and if you go on Ebay you can buy pretty much anything. The Hutchinson Encyclopedia defines Obsolescence as :-

obsolescence

Phenomenon of products or services becoming useless, or in the case of many retail goods, out of date. Obsolescence is often perceptual rather than real. Many goods that are perfectly useable become obsolescent because they become unfashionable. This is often due to new technology.

For example, vinyl records became obsolete because they were replaced in the public's affections by cassette tapes and then CDs. However, vinyl LPs were and still are perfectly functional. In fact vinyl was rescued from obsolescence by the followers of certain kinds of dance music who continue to use them.

So I think the likes of Not Spavin's photo fits the theme well - I still think mine doesn't fit the theme but I barely have a creative bone in my body so what did I really expect. At least motion should be less controversial

Well you can freeze the action or introduce blur.

I might point my camera at the ground and photograph the Earth rotating.

I have been following the monthly comp with great interest and it's good to see the various takes on the theme from individuals inputs each month. I can see each month it gets harder to vote due to the novice photographers learning at a fast pace and all the entries are well taken shots. So for me it's the thought and composition that goes into the shot carries a significant weight to the way my voting goes.

Although that could be construed as bollocks because of APB's and others shots were photo's of something they came across by chance  Hmm it's difficult to say the least.

I only wished i could have taken part but due to an injury i have been immobile for the last 4 months. I did take my camera out to try and take part in the Growth comp but i ended up dropping it trying to balance on crutches and taking photo's don't mix very well. Thankfully i was lucky it landed on soft ground and no damage done :).

I hope to get out and about to try for this months theme as i can hobble without crutches now, even if i look as though i am disco dancing when i walk

Anyway it was a hard choice again this month, special mentions to Mercia, Peachbum, janiep, Superkev, Rogers APB's and Spavs however as it's only one vote my vote goes to Cartman love the story the photo tells and the light and mood of the picture does the story justice.

Cheers mate, I really appreciate your comments, I was trying to make the gibbet look as ghostly as possible and took the shot with the fading sun to my left so that the gibbet would be almost black.

It is a really spooky place right up on top of the moors, I was there for about an hour an no cars went past in that time. Strange to think someone was actually hung there and left to rot until their body literally fell to pieces

Cheer and apologies to Peachie as I thought her format was so good that I've nicked it

P.S. I know there seemjs to be some argy bargy about the defintion of absolete so just in case ethere's any confusion I've used the one here.

Taipeisafc - The title made me laugh out loud but for the photo I think you needed to put it in a light tent to capture the real essense of the shoe. Mind you, your hand may have dropped off if you'd touched it

Ghost of EH7 - I'm new to this game so i may be wrong but your pic looks very simple and elegant but I'm guessing quite technical - reall like it and may have a bash at doing something similar when i get a bit better.

Cartman - Love this one as well but need to ask - where the hell is it and how often do you have to spass it when it's getting dark? Love the eariness of the shot and the sky looks turbulent.

Mine - Wish I'd been able to get that sky above Penshaw Monument

Robinp - This was one of the one's I wasn't sure if it met the theme and hope it wasn't the lioness that was obsolete. From a composition perspective it may have been better if the face was framed by the green bar uinstead of slightly cut off (but that mayy have been out of your hands - lucky bugger though)

WillD - Good idea but the composition let's you down a bit. The picture looks very busy and looking at the river I think you had a similar problem to me in that the sun wasn't being too friendly to you and you were trying to get some of everything in the shot. See Hauser's for a simpler crisper shot.

Wayne the Punk - Although I don't think weeds are obsolete flowers, I love the colours of this. Only slight knock would be that it looks a little two dimensional and could do with a bee or something buzzing around it.

Roger - As with Ghost of EH7 - love this one as well and glad I don't go ahead with my original sky box and VCR as I could have matched yours in a month of sunday's. Simple but elegant but marked down for it being the birdy song. only joking

Peachy - Like the theme and the layout but the one at the back is too shiney for me

Not Spavin - This one made me laugh as well. Just had a picture of Dame Edna getting rid of her bins. Didn't notice that there was boat load of background until Mercia(?) pointed it out but still a fav for me..

Mercia BlackCat - Like the panoramic view but think it could have done with being done on a day when the light was better to get the green snapping out or potentially in black and white to make it eerie (ala Carty's).

Janiep - Like the idea but there just something about the pier that's not quite right. Love the flag and the waves but I think the upper part of the pier looks like it's been cut off on the left hand side (on the right hand side it looks like it has a couple of levels and then the dome).

Hauser's Helmet - Is that herrington Park? Love the pic and definately one of my favs. The colour of the rust just jumps out and again nice and simple and clean.

Groofwoofwoofgrowl - Loved this one and brought back many memories of busted cassies when i was a bairn - I didn't think they still made Sondico's

Bigmac - Liked this as well but would have been tempted to crop it lower from the top as the brahes poking in on the left hand side take the eyes away from the bike below.

APB - Loved virtually evgerything about this pic, looks like a scene from the terminator, where was it taken?

BillyTheKid - Loved virtually evgerything about this pic, the green of the grass against the black of the sky are excellent and until Mercia point it out I didn't notice that you cut off the reflection of the tree.

Crazylegs - Wish it had been a close up of the NCB jacket mate and then you'd have been on to a winner.

Keeps21 - As with Roger's and EH7's - just love the simplicity of this.

ThankHeavenforShed7 - Have I seen this pic before?

So, the pictures I would have given votes to would have been from the following three -

Roger
APB
But my picture of the month and the one available vote is given to Billy the Kid.

P.S. Although I'm voting for Billy the Kid I should have 'forgot' to vote as he's a cheater ;)

You've definately succeded there mate - excellent picture and full of suspense

Not me mate.

Good comment about considering b&w.

Didn't think of that as the colour was poor due to the light.

Personally I don't like using light tents or staging photographs - nothing wrong with it mind just the way I feel. I always try and capture something that is occuring naturally rather than setting something up. I feel photography is a record / documentary media rather than a deeply artistic media (plus I am shit at art anyway).

P.S. Although I'm voting for Billy the Kid I should have 'forgot' to vote as he's a cheater ;)

It was in Oman mate, not too far from a Terminator scene as it happens, when I was editing I was thinking more of a nuclear test site, abandoned with the swing creaking in the street, was dying to throw it on the rook and shoot it at the top of a mountain, sunset in the background.... Ooooo arghhhhh
