Went to Eastville in the 70's must have been 74-75 not long after the St Pauls riots.

The motorway behind was either being built or having some works done on it as bricks and stones were being lobbed at us from outside the ground during and after the game.

At the end of the game a bit of concrete came in and some poor bugger got hit on the head and knocked unconscious.
That was the one. Just recounted bits of it a few posts back.

I much preferred the old style grounds. They had character, charm and atmosphere.

Leeds Road,Boundary Park,Boothferry Park,Baseball Ground,Victoria Ground(Stoke),Ashton Gate,Oakwell....

All great trips I always thought. Contrast this with monstrosities like the MacAlpine Stadium(or whatever it is now),the Britannia Stadium, the Reebok or Pride Park. All dull and soulless white elephants.

Hiring vans to go to games. None of these poncy mini buses. We used to come back to the Brewery Tap in Doncaster. Saturday night was talent night and we used to do the "Music Man" for the locals. I can do The Nikki Lauda's Oh shit, me heads on fire, me heads on fire. The Jeremy Thorpes etc.

The driver got tapped up with a lass and we all ended up going back to her place at Tickhill. He was upstairs filling her back passage, we were downstairs emptying her front room. Video, silverware etc.

What a shit hole of a ground that was

There was a cracking book about the Bristol Rovers Hoolies & music and trends of the early to mid 1970's, (unfortunately cannot remember the title) and the writer stated that Sunderland invaded their "end" and couldn't be shifted by any force by Bristol Rovers hoolies - he mentioned about our lads being made from hardened rivvets from the shipyards or summat like that
did that make a book? One of my mates from CLS robert Nelson, Ginger Nell, was arrested for leading the invasion.

It started with undreds and ended with dozens.

The rest of that seaosn was magnificent. Some legendary matches at the likes of Man City, Norwich and Everton as wlel as home games against the likes of WHU and WBA. The Middlesbrough 4 v 0 hammering was as good as I've seen form an SAFC side. Brilliant.

That good run started on a snowy Friday night (I think) with a 1-0 win over Bristol City? Anyone confirm?

That 4-0 thumping of Boro was fantastic - it had been a crap season and scoring 4 goals against them was magic - we left winding down the stairs of the Roker end with scarves (yes it was the fashion in those days) in the air and everyone singing 'You'll never walk alone'.

I remember 76/77 .

We went to Leicester and got beaten 0 v 1 IIRC. joe bolton hit the post. there was only about 500 SAFC fans there that day but what a racket/nuisance they made themselves.

I'm sure that at least 1 of the 3 made their debuts that day.

I may well be wrong but I seem to recall seeing Rowell for the first time when he came on as a sub against Hull at their place. He played half back in his first games for us.

I remember that Friday game but can't recall if it was the same period. Was that the game in which Holden scored for us?

Chelsea away circa 1975. Just around Xmas. Fuckin hell on. The CFc fans wore their away scarves which bore a canny resemblance to ours and they were in the SAFc end. IIRC Malone scored an OG and we lost 0 v 1. The likes of Micky Droy was playing for CFC.

First point confirmed.

Kevin Arnott taking the piss out of Souness - a great memory.

i used to go with me dad when i was a nipper but the first game i half remember was a charity match against a celebrity/radio1 team at roker park.
i dont know if anyone else is like this but i struggle to remember who we played a fortnight ago but can remember games from yonks ago perfectly.
there's some great reading on this thread. my personal favourites are the cup run in 85, the 3rd division season (never missed a game), the play-off at sid james, the cup game at exeter that ended 2-2, the good days under peter reid, leaping round like a loony hugging my (sadly missed) mate after gordon armstrongs header against chelsea, all the folk who ive met on my travels following the lads, both safc and other fans.
over my years of following sunderland ive come to the conclusion that i'd rather be following us than man u, chelsea, arsenal etc. we might not be always winning trophies at the end of the season but there's nearly always something going on. there's not many seasons since ive been going when we've not been involved in a cup-run, relegation or promotion.

Spurs, MOTD when the horses came on the pitch?

The Tottenham lads went in the RE and were chased out, mainly by the lads from Fencehouses, Glendenning and Mally Patterson's lads.

the cockneys had sheepskins on but had tabs stubbed out on them as SAFC worked their tickets and utlimately paid them off.

Strange thing is, SAFC don't have much of a rep with the so called hard firms. We are very rarely mentioned in any hooli type books.
Why do you think that is?

We were bricked at the Man City game. Went home a right mess. I remember that Chelsea game you were on about anarl. :-D

George Foster always used to carry his certificate around proving he'd had the snip. The dirty get

George Forster always used to say, 'Nee bother mind lads, behave yerselves' as we got off the bus.

Stan Cummins scoring the winner at Anfield to keep us up, only to be told by mags that they let us win. That may be correct but no fucker had told Souness when he hit the bar from 200 bastard yards (exaggerated for effect)
