I didnt go, but some of my older mates did. Legendary game that Tommy Lynn has just recounted in the latest edition of ALS.

Tom Lyn did a review of the 3rd division away games and he told a story of Blackpool which I was at. We'd been looking for somewehere to have a drink as the pubs on the night wouldn't let a group in. Bumped into some lads who had a hotel and were invited back to the bar. Inside everyone was mortal and we sat next to 2 lads playing connect 4 - actually one was asleep and the awake one was going balistic as he was winning then I noticed that the lad asleep had a pigeons head sticking out of trousers. How they got the dead pigeon down his kegs without him waking up I've no idea..

the whole run was bizarre. Started at C Palace IIRC and then just seemed to gather momentum. Remember the Spurs game well. SAFC kicked to shit after the game. Lad off the SAFCSA bus taken to hospital - hit with a bottle IIRC.

Palace was home in front of a tiny crowd, to this day I don't know why they don't hand out vouchers / loyalty points for those games

Legendary game indeed. I had nightmares about it for weeks after!! Was being chased around by 40 year old dockers for much of the first half - somehow managed to get away and into the seats.
My mates told me that no one had really been to Millwall before and no one had any idea what they were like. SAFC got the runaround. One of my mates left at half time. Severe accident waiting to happen.

Of legendary SAFC away games that I know about post war that game would be in the top 3 or so.

Lad I went to School with, posts on here as East Midlands Mackem or EM MACKEM not sure which one.

I was swinging on one of the crossbars after that game
I didn't even have a ticket to get into the game - a fair sized crowd of us without tickets were hanging around outside the ground just before kick off, when some police official decide it would be safer to let us all into the ground for free, rather than have us all over the pubs in Blackpool

Pretty sure that programme vouchers were used once we got to the final.

I used to hate that as it ruined your programmes. Well it did in 1985, all other years remained perfect.

Stan Cummins played against us for Palace in the League Cup and was then cup-tied when he rejoined us.

We had 2 mini buses down for the weekend. The Manchester was wasted. The third division season was superb and could be talked about for days.

Aye we used to go to the Mecca on the Friday night and make our way down to Dundas Street - last pint in the Grapes (IIRC) and fish and chips from that chippy next soor - some fine states on the coach......

sleeping in the luggage rack on the coach :-D

anyone remember a lad called Donno ??
used to sing Donno Donno BO on the busses to him??

That was only part of it though - after the match in that road which runs along from KC to Euston saw battles between Sunderland and Man U - time dulls the memory a little but I seem to recall that during this a tin of paint appeared from somewhere and was thrown towards the Man U fans - exploding in the road and dowsing them in said emulsion..... :)

One other thing about that day was that we met up again in some pub in Soho after the match, and we saw two blokes holding hands - remember this was 1974, and things weren't quite as open in those days. When one left they kissed on the lips - we were all astounded..... (just what were 2 mags doing there we wondered?) :)

The strippers in Close Encounters, usually followed by a comedian who 9 times out of 10 wouldn't last a set because of the abuse

Is that right? I remember he looked a mess....

76 cup game. They beat us 0 v 1. Allison got his hat knocked off by someone in the Fulwell End, hoying what was reputed to be a snooker ball.

I'm pretty sure someone thumped Palace fan and 'comedian' Roy Hudd after the game when he was larging it.....

I remember the Liverpool match c.1982 when we played on a totally snow covered pitch and with an orange ball. This will never happen again.

Pretty sure it was on MOTD - a rare treat for Sunderland fans in those days.

We lost 2-4, scoring 2 late goals after Liverpool had gone into a 4 goal lead. We wore that hideous white and pin stripe red shirt with red shorts.

i never knew them very well but the likes of slosher, Berti, Armsy and Lammer became legends. My ex BIL knew them all well. All ex Vauxies IIRC.

We went to Stoke with them once - chaos.

OK Fred, now you're the Ayatollah. Dirty twat from Peterlee with his egg sandwiches

George Foster always used to carry his certificate around proving he'd had the snip. The dirty get

You can also remember the number of roundabouts on the A1 (loads of the bastards) and them gradually decreasing year by year

I remember a period of my life in my 20s when I used to attend every home game (still do) and most away games - (about 1983 - 1996) During this period I was so fiercely passionate about the club / its support and everthing about it. I was critical of people who didnt go without fully understanding the reasons why. Then i got married had kids and away games slowed to a trickle - (WHED and co it may well happen to you!!)

I loved that period of my life supporting Sunderland, the 3rd division, the abject misery of relegations, nearly getting killed at York Hillsborough style. The bizzare, unbelievable scenes at Stamford Bridge when Westy scored with a police horse chasing a fan across the penalty area. In 1976/77 my first 100% home attendance year the relegation via Jimmy Hill after beating Boro, West Brom and West Ham 4-0, 6-1 and 6-0. Seeing Sunderland a number of times at Wembley and losing - the 1985 Milk Cup final, the play off final, the 1992 FA Cup final, the mercantile credit classic competition where we lost on penalties to Wigan at Wembley and of course the play offs v Charlton.

Perhaps some of our younger supporters can understand why many of the older supporters are so cynical - when everything seems OK you always know thers something to deflate you around the corner :-(

Nontheless coping in adversity is what being a Sunderland fan is all about :)

Most of your post strikes a chord. Wasn't involved though in what happened at York and didn't come out of the hat for tickets for 1992. I can remember crying in the car park on my way to work when one of the lads asked me if my voucher had come out of the draw:cry:
