Is international footy crap or am I getting old?

Comes from listening to kids chatting at weekend and arguing who's better? Messi or Ronaldo?

I'm early 50s so first WC I remember to enjoy was 82.

I bought World Soccer mag with all the squads in and honestly...meh. Just thinking from the late 90s/2000s world cups lads of my age saw...

Crespo, Veron, batistuta.
Del piero, vieri, maldini, Nesta, Buffon, cannavaro, pirlo, inzahghi, totti.
Rivaldo, Roberto Carlos, kaka, ronaldinho, Ronaldo.
Xavi, iniesta, busquets, puyol, David villa.
Rooney, Beckham, Gerrard, lampard, Terry, cole, Shearer, Owen.
Zidane, trezeguet, thuram, Deschamps, pires, desailly, blanc.
Davids, seedorf, Bergamo, de Boers, stam.

Then variously Figo, Keane, stoichkov, shevchenko, sammer, ballack, taribo west, litmanen, Larsson.

Looking at the talent or maybe "star names" now there's undoubtedly good players but I'd say a million miles from them above.

Time stands for no one 😎

The list above misses Péle, Best, Cruyff, Puskas, Matthews, Moore, Beckenbauer and a few more 🙄

All boils down to opinions 🤔

My point is more games I'd have previously thought tremendous I'm just not arsed about. Struggle to watch a full game these days, such is my (lack of) interest. And that's across domestic and international football.

Unless it's the lads.
Ohhh I see. Yes. WC has a stupid amount of meaningless games. Combined with the time of night it will be on, I probably won't watch much.

England have bored the shite out of people for years i think its put many people off international footy. Yes they'd done well to get so far in the last couple of tournaments but they havent excatly been great entertainment along the way to go with all hype that comes with every WC or euros.

The England team were not at all hyped in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016 or 2018 mind.

In 2020 after the Semi final appearance in Russia and hosting games at Wembley there was more hope - which turned out to be reasonably placed as we got to a final. In 2022 there was perhaps some more expectation and, to be fair, we matched it with good performances and were unlucky to go out in the Quarter Finals. In 2024 there was definitely more expectation and hype and we were shit but somehow made the Final.

So I disagree with the assessment we’re hyped up every WC or Euros. Even this one - who is hyping us? Think we see the team as weaker than a few years ago and we’ve left some top class players at home. Not really sure there’s any hype.

The 2022 final was excellent mind, one of the best I’ve watched
My only takeaway from that game were both post final whistle... did it go to penners?

Anyway, the villa keeper being a prick with his trophy & the get up they made messi wear to lift the trophy are my only two memories... oh, and that bellend chef from London who charges a fortune to artistically drop salt on steaks was getting selfies on the pitch afterwards.

The actual game i can't remember!

when i look back we were spoilt in 60s and 70s loved the Home internationals only international football on telly and world cups none of this put it for the sake of it crap we are getting nowadays
