Comes from listening to kids chatting at weekend and arguing who's better? Messi or Ronaldo?

I'm early 50s so first WC I remember to enjoy was 82.

I bought World Soccer mag with all the squads in and honestly...meh. Just thinking from the late 90s/2000s world cups lads of my age saw...

Crespo, Veron, batistuta.
Del piero, vieri, maldini, Nesta, Buffon, cannavaro, pirlo, inzahghi, totti.
Rivaldo, Roberto Carlos, kaka, ronaldinho, Ronaldo.
Xavi, iniesta, busquets, puyol, David villa.
Rooney, Beckham, Gerrard, lampard, Terry, cole, Shearer, Owen.
Zidane, trezeguet, thuram, Deschamps, pires, desailly, blanc.
Davids, seedorf, Bergamo, de Boers, stam.

Then variously Figo, Keane, stoichkov, shevchenko, sammer, ballack, taribo west, litmanen, Larsson.

Looking at the talent or maybe "star names" now there's undoubtedly good players but I'd say a million miles from them above.
 

Loved WC way back. Less and less as time goes on. Footy is on so much now whereas when I was a kid it was FA cup final and England games and that was it.

Plus the odd game I've watched in PL or whatever , theres about 3 or 4 fecking commentators who are all shite , and a studio full of blurts prattling on

Lamine Yamal is a considerably far superior footballer than all of those in bold.
 
Absolutely loved international footy when I was a bairn and in my 20’s.

As I’ve got older, I’m not that fussed about it. I’ll probably get a bit excited when the World Cup starts and England’s first game. Saying that, I don’t think we’ll do owt.
 
suspect a problem for a lot of people will be the away that FIFA have gone about things in this century, certainly in my book they've diminished the game in general with the commercialisation of the the game (probably seen what was possibly in the premier league). the americanisation has to be a factor this time round too...
 
Again, not sure if it's an age thing but tournaments seem so forgettable these days. At a push I could probably remember every England knock out fixture from 90-06 as well as having a good memory of the overall competitions. The last 4 or 5 though have completely blurred in my mind even when England have progressed well and I was even at the semi final at Wembley in 21.
 
I like threads like this when everyone says they like stuff better during the peak of their lives and still can’t work it out when others say the same

England have bored the shite out of people for years i think its put many people off international footy. Yes they'd done well to get so far in the last couple of tournaments but they havent excatly been great entertainment along the way to go with all hype that comes with every WC or euros.
