Running Thread 2026

I've read that you shouldn't abandon the running altogether. Absolutely knacks the next day though.

I'll give some exercises a bash.
Try the foot strengthening too as it may be coming from your arch. Towel curls first thing before you even get up out of bed are meant to be great for that area

I blame my trainers to be honest. Feel too soft for me underfoot but paid £200 for the fkin things so they’re getting at least 500km before I move on from them.

Could be on to something there! I've got flat feet. I've had no bother for the past year but my shoes are soft. ASICS Megablast and New balance fuel cell rebel.

What shoes have you got?

Where to start , I have a fair few 😂- I’m flat footed too and the Superblast 3 are giving me the grief. Love the megablast but they hurt the top of my foot next to big toe, can’t sort the lacing out properly but use them for tempo stuff.

Incidentally, the SB3 hurt in same spot but the window lacing solved that. Novablast 5 were the exact same. Superblast 2 I had zero problems with but they’ve got 800k on them now - still return to them for easy runs.

Just moved to Adios Pro 4’s as my carbon racer but might go back to Deviate Elite 4’s as they were superb for comfort. Adios are comfy for me but fear my mid foot strike is causing ankle/Achilles issues in them.

Anyone recommend a link/info on fuelling longer runs.
In my first half a few year ago I took nothing and suffered after 9-10 mile. Had to walk/run the last couple of mile.
Getting back into it this year and I’ve just used lucozade/powerade and helped myself to the kids sweets from the cupboard.
Did a half this afternoon which wasn’t planned until I was into the run. It went ok and the first one I’ve managed to do without having to stop or feeling dead at the end. However just half a mile from home I was struggling with me guts! Presume it’s the ket/powerade but not sure what to try instead. Tried gels once and they had a rank aftertaste. Hoping to increase the distance as my weight drops but that would have stopped me today if I wasn’t so close to finishing.

Also need to find some better trainers. Blisters now!

Precision Fuel do a free Zoom call to go through exactly this stuff.

I’ve done it and it was spot on. I was sceptical and thought it would just be a sales pitch for 15mins and they didn’t pitch one thing just gave great advice on a topic I wanted some hints on.

Their gels are also spot on as are their electrolyte tabs for longer runs (pre run).

I've got a code to use on vitality so might be time to get some more.

Would you recommend something a bit firmer for flat feet?

I'm not bothered about having race trainers etc just one fairly all rounder.

The megablast would be my choice if the upper was a bit neater. Unbelievable trainer - definitely my favourite, just the hard bit where the lacing is hits a spot on my foot that just aches sometimes.

Best do it all trainer out there in my opinion. Can’t wait for the 2nd iteration.

I can’t say that they’d be causing Achilles pain, and I’m no medical (or running/trainer) expert but my honest amateur advice would be strength and conditioning around the foot, hamstring, quad and definitely calf areas.

Does anyone on here use the Garmin Forerunner??? I use the GarminVivoActive 3 at the moment but looking to upgrade and only really do running now so any recommendations

Yeah but it’s been a few years since I took notice and i think the GNR may even take a lot more notice of numbers being sold . A lot of people defer their numbers but i bet loads still look to sell and get some money back
Got the forerunner 245 and it's spot on for what I use it for.

I never take any gels, can't get away with them.
Fizzy haribo or jelly babies does me. Make sure your sufficiently fueled prior your run too.
Sunderland HM i'd had porridge and toast before hand.
Grabbed a couple cups of whatever that isotonic drink was they were giving out too and I managed a pb.

Would you carry on running as well you think?

If it stops aching after 10mins or so in a run then yes, personally I would. If you are getting shooting pains then absolutely not. That’s just personal feeling on niggles, not medical advice mind!

I can feel mine quite a bit but not enough to make me wince or change my running mechanics. I forget about it after a couple of km so run through it.

I’d recommend a physio in all honesty, depending on your location you can’t get better than Kev in Seaham at Stride.

I never took anything enroute apart from water unless it was a marathon. I would always make sure I had a decent breakfast - porridge with half milk / half water and honey, I found excellent - easily digestible also.

Apologies if you know all this but
Longer runs means your feet swell so make sure you size up either half or a full size most people do.
Don't forget hydration on longer runs.
I tried tailwind which goes in your water and gives you everything you need but couldn't get away with it so use Kendal gels, books and salt tablets for anything over 2 hours.

Cheers I didn’t know that about feet swelling up.
Haven’t a clue about fuelling so just trying to work out what I should be doing to avoid crashing. Most runs I don’t bother with anything but trying to increase the distance now.

To note this should say Bloks, as in cliff Blok jellies not books. I'm not clever enough to read and run similtaneously

Tired spikes out for the first time in track on Monday. My calf’s are so tight it’s unbelievable! Thought I’d get pain for like 24hrs. 36hrs in and I’m still walking like I’ve shit out a hedgehog.

Hopefully dies down today but I’m feeling it! Wowza

Knee been feeling loads better, dunno how much of it has been down to the exercises the physio showed me and how much of it has been down the fact I've barely ran for a while, suspect a bit of both.

Tried a 10k yesterday, started feeling it a little bit in the knee and woke up this morning and it's feeling like a 1-2/10 pain wise. Definitely made the right decision withdrawing from Hartlepool and Windermere races.

Gunna try it again Sunday and see how it feels, might have to drop back off again for another week or so.

Slowly heading in the right direction but seems like it'll be at least another couple of weeks for a full return. Was eyeing up the Durham 10k in mid July as something to try and train and get back for but will hold off on booking that for now.

Well after a year off due to having glass ankles and personal strife I’m finally running again - couch to 5k is really humbling when your used to running much further and much quicker than you are now.

Hoying on 2 stone hasn’t helped either.

Any tips?

Take your time. Don't compare yourself to before and parkrun is fab 😀.
Oh and obviously you'll need at least one pair of new trainers if not more 🤣. Good luck.
