Xhaka, Le Fee and Mukiele

I’m not taking about these players cementing their place in folklore with supporter’s (although I think they will/ have)

I’m talking about them being the best

Assuming you are dismissing number of games played. Problem with that is if all you ever play for the club is one season in time no one is going to call you the best as time moves on.

If the likes of Bould, Shwarz, Hutchinson, Pickford, Henderson, Xzaka, Le Fee, Nordi, Cana kept up their form with longer service they would they still be the best, but their best would be associated with Sunderland.

It’s why SKP and SNQ , cannot yet be eclipsed
Unpopular opinion but Malbranque is massively overrated on here

Could only play 60 minutes, shite defensively and had 0 end product

Still the best player of that era for us

That makes two of us who know our football then marra. I worked with a Spurs fan and Fulham fan for best part of 15yrs and they both warned me.

Get into any SAFC team in the clubs history.
I think Enzo Le Fee could be the best. Our GOAT. Maybe there is only Raich Carter who could rival him.

Anybody disagree?
You do realise that we have won:

6 league titles (3 in 4 seasons)
World championship 1895
2 FA cups (1 game off a double in 1912/13).

Don’t you think that there are 11 players that you could select from those teams?

I am fully aware of our history.
I think Carter, Shackleton, Hurley and Baxter would be notable shouts as well as the three current lads for discussion.

Charlie Buchan > Xhaka

Patsy Gallacher > ELF

Any of these defenders > Mukiele

  • Hughie Wilson: The greatest half-back of the era, captain of the championship-winning sides, and the only player to feature in the club's very first league game (1890) and their first match at Roker Park (1898). [ ]
  • John Auld: A commanding left-half and club captain whose leadership was crucial to securing the 1891-92 and 1892-93 league titles. [ , ]
  • Donald Gow: An exceptionally reliable Scottish full-back signed from Rangers who anchored the backline during the Wearsiders' early years. []
  • Tom Porteous: The club's first prominent captain who captained the 1892 title-winning squad. [, ]

Le Fee is 10X the footballer Sessegnon and Steed were combined already.
Ten times may be a exaggeration but I agree with your sentiment.Baxter was magnificent but was a flawed individual. Hurley is my all time favourite for performance and the length of time he was with the club. I hope Le Fée is with us for a similar length of time (402 appearances).

I can only comment on players I've seen over a decent period of time. Even I am too young to have seen those lads. Anderson was an inspiring captain and Todd will always be mentioned in threads like this.
There’s someone on the Le Fee thread who disagrees. Seems to think £25m sale would be good business
And I thought I was out of touch with reality.

I’m sure they were all canny lads, and honest, but they’d get eaten alive in the modern game.

i think from the current crop Xhaka brings more in terms of overall influence but for pure footballing ability Enzo is as good as i've ever seen. just an outrageously good footballer and a joy to watch. his numbers would be ridiculous in a team with better finishers

You should have maybe stipulated your timeframe then. Modern players will obviously be stronger and more fit, but I doubt that Paul mcShane would ever be better than Hurley.

You need to compare equivalent qualities in different eras. The team in 1895 would be the equivalent of the modern PSG or Arsenal. ELF wouldn’t be playing for either.

You really think that ELF is our best ever player?
