Tom is absolutely spot-on and I’d get tattooed from him in a heartbeat (I’ve already got a few from him).

I’ve tattooed more SAFC badges than I can remember tbh, but I’m no longer in Sunderland, but will happily tattoo any exiles around the Cambridge area. I’m proper fed up of doing Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham shit and it would make a nice change.

There’s a few things I’ll give my opinion on - The ‘Sunderland’ should be done as black writing, not negative space, or the ink around the lettering will encroach and make it unreadable in a few years (I’ve had to try and fix quite a few old badge tattoos because of this). Also, the ones that look like sewn on embroidery are very impressive, in the photo taken directly after. They rely on a lot of white ink to give the illusion of thread, and unless you’re never going to expose your tattoo to sunlight then that white ink will very quickly fade away and the effect is quite significantly less impressive.

Hope this helps. Also, I used to love doing the badges because I love SAFC. So I knew I’d be able to have a bit craic about the lads with the customer. There’s only one great tattooist in Sunderland that I can think of who supports Sunderland and that’s Pete, from Tight Lines Tattoo. Otherwise, be prepared to talk about anything other than football. 😂

Thank you. You say about the sunderland text should be in black writing and I can see why from what you're saying. Can't see any examples of this on Google. Only white text. Black wouldn't look right. Or am I missing something?

Yeah, most people tattoo it as white writing (negative space ie. Just skin) with the black around it, like on the badge. But skin doesn’t work the same as any other surface and the ink will start to spread and encroach on the lettering rendering it unreadable after a few years. I’m sure there’s a few people on here with badges like that. It’s up to you, but I think it’s a decent compromise even though it’s not identical to the printed image. Nobody ever complained when I explained to them that was what I was going to do. It’s about making sure the tattoo looks as good as possible for the rest of your life.

Not if you line the tattoo with black first. Also, the colours in the SAFC badge are good for longevity in tattoos. Lighter colours like yellows and pinks fade quickly, but you should still see red in 30 years time.

Thank you. I'm still confused or possibly a bit thick. So all "white" on a tattoo is just negative space, therefore any colour can just encroach into it? Or that's more the case with small text areas where it just becomes a blurred mess? So in order to do the Sunderland in black, the background would be negative space?

It’s because the text will be small, yeah. If you did it the size of your whole back, say, then it would be fine, but tattoos move in the skin over time, so the black surrounding the letters will eventually start to spread into the letters which makes them unreadable. Most white that you see on a tattoo is just negative space, bare skin. White ink isn’t used like a colour. We don’t (tattooists who know the score) colour images in with white ink as it basically lasts a summer before the sun has faded the white beyond any recognition.

The way I did the badge was with ‘SUNDERLAND’ in big bold black letters and left the background as skin. As I said, nobody ever complained (well, to my face 😂).

If you’re adamant on the white lettering then just do the badge a decent size, so the letters are big enough to hold their shape over time.
