Proper player bought into the club absolutely class lad love him to bits was worried he might not have the ability to step up to premier league proved me wrong wish him nothing but goodness

I obviously love all of those glorious heroes, but here goes.....

My lad absolutely loves football. He plays and tries his hardest, it doesn't come easy to him.

All kids grow up hoping to be Messi or Ronaldo, and if you're that good, fantastic be Messi or Ronaldo!

But if you're not that good, you can be Luke O'Nien.

You can be the best pro you can, own up to your mistakes - pour over them and keep learning.

You can be the best person behind the scenes, setting the right example.

You can be "limited" in ability but work your backside off day in day out for a couple of decades. And in the end, if your lucky..... You might end up being the person and the player Luke is.

I think Luke O'Nien might be the best possible example to any little footballers out there. And I'm absolutely buzzing he's been part of our journey.

(*And I'm not saying he's a limited footballer in any sense, some of them cross field, 45 yard pings are an absolute joy to behold).

Try putting this shite on the matchday threads.......There's plenty of the likes of messi, ronaldo (both), xavi, bergkamp, henry, etc, etc level footballers on there!

I honestly thought he would be finished at this level and we were only hanging onto him for sentimentality and/or some sense of continuity.

Model pro whose total commitment and work effort makes up for his lack of natural ability. To have the captainship taken off you and handed to someone new to the team and be a model pro about it speaks volumes about his character.

This could also be a Henderson post.
There were threads on here where the SMB consensus was he lacked the natural ability of Jack Colback, before he raised - every possible trophy - with Liverpool (and captained England to our best positions since '66 multiple times).

Suddenly becomes even more important for next season. He was excellent yesterday again and if he keeps himself in top shape which we know he will, he’ll get plenty of football next season in Europe!!

There's something so Sunderland about O'Nien

He must wake up every morning and just go "how did that happen"

Some fan of another club described him as 'has a mistake in him every game' and it's been true until his last few appearances.

He's gone from trying to score an own goal from the halfway line at Port Vale to putting in solid performances to help us qualify for Europe.

Europe FFS!

I'll just say that again. EUROPE! LUKE O'NIEN

It's f****** brilliant

There was several reports from the L1 years of other players being a bit snide towards him because he stayed back and trained harder than everyone else.

Anyone know where Chris maguire and Tom Flanagan are now cos I know where LON is and that’s the Europa League!

Technically I think he’s still club captain. I think Dan Neil was team captain.
