But if there is no direct punishment already in place, why should that be the result?
May as well fine the Saints and promote Hull.
I really don’t understand why Boro played Southampton anyway. They should surely have lodged a complaint when the alleged breach happened and let the EFL deal with it there and then.

Except they did lodge complaint and the EFL said it was going to be investigated. I suppose they didn't want themselves to be fined or punished if they refused to play the first leg

The Hull fans that have already paid for accommodation and train travel will not be reimbursed and and change of date would almost certainly mean that fans will have to fork out twice and that is if they can even make the new date.
Plenty will either not be able to make the rearranged date due to work and other commitments while many more will simply find that it is financially impossible.

The EFL ‘saving face’ is the least of my concerns.
Let the game go ahead as planned (sorry Boro) and if found guilty, which they have already admitted to, punish Southampton with a huge fine and (if Southampton win) a draconian, suspended points deduction when they drop back into the EFL.
Anything else just says “fuck the fans….as long as we look ‘good’….” from the EFL.

If soton go up any fine would need to be greater than any reward. A fine of over £250m is unlikely. Throw them out.

Well it is relevant to the punishment as dictated by the rules. Stupidly but that’s how it’s written.
 
Over the moon foe him.as he amd the other Southampton players must be gutted as the prospect of getting tired out the chance of premier league football due to someone else's doing at the club
