Buying players when they're bad

Martin Jol when we bought Brian Brobbey: “Probably the best buy of the summer. Sunderland have done well. You have to buy them when they’re bad – that’s what I’ve learned. You have to buy good players when they’re £20 million. Otherwise, he would’ve been £50 million or £60 million."

Which underperforming players could we get for £20m and flip them to a £50m player like Brobbey? Delap? Harvey Elliott?
Whey when we bought almost all our current players, WE were bad let alone them

Oh I know. We won’t get him. But it’s a lazy mantra that all relegated players are bad
Quality players have been relegated in the past and will get relegated in the future, loads of examples. Ruling players out just because of relegation is dumb. However, I would probably steer clear of players that are constantly getting relegated, I couldn't understand west ham going for walker-peters for example (probably a bad example because he's just crap)

Elliot is a funny one. On paper he doesn't look like has very much going for him. He's not particularly great at anything. Had an absolutely stellar career for England under 21's. A goal a game from midfield.

Touch, passing, vision, composure. Looks very good technically.

There's some players you look at and can see there is a good player in there. With the right coaching he can reach his potential. Le Fee and Brobbey are good examples.

There's players who show promise but really aren't as good as expected. Liam Delap is probably that.

Then there's players who have potential and no matter the coaching or environment, aren't arsed. Jack Rodwell being the poster boy.

There's no sense in buying players in the English league given you'll be paying well over the odds.

In the summer, it'll be same again, looking at players in countries such as France.
We will. But we also need homegrown players.
Can't get a start ahead of Ross Barclay. Can barely get a game off the bench. 4 games out of 37.
He’s not playing for Villa because there is an obligation after 10 games.
