Running Thread 2026

Really disappointing today, 10th year doing the Sunderland 10k and it was actually one of my slowest ever. Been dealing with some knee issues (IT Band) for a few weeks now so haven't trained a great deal. Started too fast, my second 5k was nearly 5 mins slower than the first which is concerning.

Well done everyone who done it today, was fairly good conditions for it.

Got Hartlepool HM in 2 weeks and Windermere Marathon in 4 weeks. Think I just need to get through those 2 events and have some extended period of rest over the summer. Plenty of time to reset and rebuild for Athens Marathon in November.
Shit happens mate. Well done for completing it. Get yourself fit and you’ll bounce back
6 second PB for me today in the HM. Happy with that as I'd done no long runs at all

You were looking good when I seen you
Congrats on the PB and well done to all. Hope it was a cracking event and I’m gutted I’ve missed it like.

Cheers mate, I actually ran the first 5k in 20:34 which is my fastest for 4 years, so to slump to over 45mins from that point was a bit disastrous, obviously I've lost some fitness with less training in the last few weeks.

Got a bit of a decision to make on Windermere Marathon on 14th June like. Can't defer and too late for a refund, but got til the 29th to cancel my hotel for free. Currently booked in for a 2 day stay in Ambleside to the tune of £240, so quite tempting just to sack the run off and save the money.

I'm leaning towards doing it still, it was never a PB potential course anyway was more doing for the experience and the scenery so not bothered if I'm going into it not in form. Got 28 days to try and improve this knee, I reckon I'm only gunna be running about 5-6 times and have the odd game of Padel before then so hopefully be in a decent condition. Then can fully concentrate on recovery after it.

Well done to all who done it.

Ran it with our lass, for who it was her last proper training run before Edinburgh marathon. Went slowly round in 1h10m and thoroughly e joy it. It's a lovely run, well organised and a great route, and a really nice atmosphere. Was a nice change doing it without being absolutely focused on going as fast as I could. Had a great time.

I say all the above, but I know next year I'll be going for the best time I can get again  Still a nice experience though, running it with our lass. Done it for a few races this last year - Pier2Pier, GNR etc... - and always like it.

I’ve been all over the s&c recently trying to rid myself of my niggles and it genuinely makes a difference.

You put some miles in mind, with padel on top being more bursts and twists that probably isn’t helping the knee issue.

Tried KT tape?
Edit: As assistance to the current issue rather than a cure!

Aye started doing some stretches and some resistance bands stuff for the hips and glutes, rest is the main cure for IT Band issues but strengthening is the way to stop it coming back. Aye probably didn't rest enough after that Goggins Challenge, this knee issue started presenting itself about 2 weeks after that.

I find it really hard to not exercise like haha, I've got a couple games of Padel booked so don't like to cancel and potentially let people down. In fairness, at the moment it's not actually too problematic, the pain in my knee is like a 3/10 at worst and it's more after a run rather than during it.

Got a knee support which I might just have to keep wearing, haven't bothered with it the last couple runs.

I managed to get around without my calf dieing, kudos to some advice on here that siad dont let the start get to you and stick to your pace....I mean I didnt stick to my pace but was holding back as loads flew past me who I then started to overtake inthe last 5-7K from Roker onwards. My first HM so I got a personal best of 2:10 whihc for a semi injured chunky 50 year old bloke I'm over the moon with, was aiming for an injury free 2:30. I thought the event was superbly organised and had a nice atmosphere and access in and out was great ended up having a pint in Fitzys with the Mrs afterwards. Well done to anyone that ran today as lets be honest that alone puts you in the top 5% of the population in this country -cheers

I don't remember the Marina bit being so hilly. Have they changed the route slightly?
Don’t think so. That Roker Park climb is brutal. At odds with the first pretty much 4k being a doddle. Only slight hill is coming from the East End towards the bridge.

Well in, mate.

Enjoyed that today. Got three different times across phone, watch and chip of 1.58, 1.59 and 2.00.21, so think I’ll take an average and say I scraped under  either way, I was 10, 11 or 12 minutes quicker than London last month so that’s a positive, but the main takeaway was that I felt pretty good all the way round. Started right towards the back and paced myself through different stages about bang on. Forgot how deceiving the last mile or so is going up from the uni.

Need to think what my next goal/race/challenge is. Got a marathon sized monkey sitting on my shoulder telling me I should try and start increasing up to being able to do one of them but I dinnah. Half is absolutely the limit currently so feels like it would take some doing. Do want to try and break 50 for 10k as well so might focus on that first. But it’s nice to finally say I’m feeling enthused by it again. December, January and February were pretty awful and just never really felt it. But starting to get the bug back.

Well done, everyone!

Good stuff mate, similar I felt mostly comfortable and was steady away.
I'd like to do a marathon, but I didn't have the time to train properly for the half, got no chance at a marathon currently
