The Pep myth

He did inherit some great players in 2008. He did a fantastic job at Barcelona winning 3 leagues, 2 Spanish cups and 2 Champions Leagues in his 4 years there

I'm not trying to shag the fella, but for 2 seasons before they'd been shite in the league, and won one spanish supercup. In his first season they pissed everything.

Spain won the 2010 world cup with 7 of his team starting, they won the Euros in 2012 with 6 of his team starting.

The style of football he implemented helped make those 3 what they have become and each one of them has very vocally said that.

Aye it's easy enough to throw money at good players but they've got to click into a system and with players already there. Dani Alves was already a brilliant player, but Pep paid about 30 mil for him, which was shitloads at the time, and he went on to become one of the most decorated players of all time and completely re-write modern fullbacks.

Busquets.
Would you shag him though if he asked you?

I’m sure I’ll get tons of abuse for this, so I’ll caveat in advance. He’s clearly a top coach. This is more a “is he as good as he thinks he is?” post

it’s now 10 years since he won the champions league. Despite having pretty much unlimited money at City and coaching Bayern, one of the biggest clubs on the planet

He got somewhat fortunate with Barca as he inherited arguably the best player ever in his prime

look at his City numbers. He’s been great domestically. But he should be when you look at what he’s bought. The transfer fees are from memory, so tell me I’m wrong

Ederson £35m (one of the highest fees ever at the time)
Walker £50m
Mendy £50m (even without the news he’s been crap)
Cancelo £40m+
Dias, Stones, Ake, Laporte at a combined £220m ish
Rodri £60m
De Bruyne £57m
Silva £35m
Jesus £27m
Mahrez £60m
Grealish £100m
Torres £25m

there will be more. Probably only one looks a shocker, but given the money surely he has to win more?

who has he sold at a profit? Sane?

who has he developed? Foden?

I’ll get pelters, but 10 years since a CL. With that money. He’s not the genius he thinks he is?
The pep myth continues apace
😄😄😄

Pep has changed modern football. It's moved toward a lot more stats. Stats pointing toward possession winning games. Pass the ball around and you are more likely to score than to concede.

And it is boring. So boring. His lastbywqrs with Barcelona were at a point where they were simply not worth watching.

I hope football is changing. PSG are going in a different direction, willing to give up possession to create high pressure and counter attacks, by awarding their opponents at throw in in their half.

I for one hope the era of Pep is soon gone. More attacking, less +60 passes backwards and sideways

You are so right. I think this is the first FA cup final I have missed. I can't abide wayching City . Boring football. Pep's a winner but it comes at the expence of flair.

Yet he coached two of the most succesful young managers in the game, Arteta and Kompany... And absolutly spanked Fergies United..
Fact check:

Pep took over at Barcelona in 2008
Xavi made his debut in 1998 and had made over 400 appearances for the club
Iniesta 2002 and more than 250
Messi 2005 and more than 100

Facts matter

Oh and the won the champions league in 2006. As well as the league
Pep 5 - 1 Fergie agg. The same Fergie who had rooney and ronaldo up front and got absolutely f***ing battered.

Successful? Arteta? I’ve won the same amount of PL titles as he has. I’m not sure on Kompany either, a bloke off the street could manage Bayern to the league.

Pep’s football is boring to watch but there’s still a chance for him to win another treble this season. Mind it helps being able to go buy Palace’s and Bournemouth’s best players in January. Not many have the luxury of that. Plus he’s backed by an oil state and the club has 115 hanging over them

Cesc, Villa and Mascherano were hardly him plucking hidden gems out of nowhere. They were all great players when he signed them. He is a great coach clearly though.
