Matty Young .

I think it's important he plays in the english leagues as he's still going through a key development phase and the physicality of the english came is really important if he's going to be a success in the premier league one day
Is it that important? Roefs and lammens didn’t have any English league experience and have been two of the best keeps in the league whereas Sanchez has been in the league for years and still gets bullied off the ball.

I see your viewpoint, but both those i think have gone on record to say the physicality has been the biggest challenge this year. And with the way throw ins and corners are this season it's only going one way.

On that basis i personally would still have it high priority

Just hope it’s a team playing out from the back tbh, that’s what he needs as it’s how we seem to want to play, even if it’s league 1.

Goalkeepers need to be comfortable with the ball at their feet nowadays.

This lad is improving all the time. Only 19 isn't he?

Get him some guaranteed games in the Champo or L1 on loan next year. Its time. Hopefully he carries on his development. Would love a local lad back in goal. Never got too long with Pickers.

He's preforming extremely well at the top of the championship this season and last for us. He's definitely good enough as no. 2

We really need to be mindful of the home grown rule and having a no. 2 and no. 3 ad HG will free up those spaces else where in the squad.

If we do go down that route, which other HG keeper would you have at no. 2? Ramsdale?

There aren't many HG keepers out there

Yes also see my answer above

We aren't in a position to have top quality as no. 2. Patterson has proved he's a very capable keeper at a really high standard
He isn't good enough for the Premier and his distribution was poor in the Championship.

Judging from the feedback or the Darlo and Salford fans he’s an outstanding prospect. Darlo fans said he was a better prospect than Pickford……

Nominated for EFL Young player of the year.

Consistent England youth recognition.

89 (75 for league 2 Salford) first team appearances at 19. Not 20 till back end of November by which time he should have 100 first team appearance under his belt amd will at least be playing league 1 but possibly championship football. By contrast Pickford at 20 had 12 first team appearances for Burton (lg 2 plus 20odd non league appearances) and had just been sent out on loan 2 Carlisle (lg1). Patto didn’t get his loan to none league till he was 21.

The eye test, Matty Young has an excellent all round game. Has a calmness that is very rare in young keepers. Clearly has the trust of his defenders when I’ve seen play. His kicking game is excellent. And he seems very grounded from the interviews I’ve seen.

For me, as a prospect, biggest keeping prospect we’ve produced in my life time.

Better than Pickford?

Better than Pickford?
As a prospect at that age for sure, IMO. Just look at his record and what he’s achieved so far compared to Jordan. Long long long way to go and very possible he won’t have quite a linear progression as Pickford from hear.

But good loan next year in the championship, which is easily within reach and he’s back with us next summer looking to challenge in our first team at 21.

Mags would go into utter meltdown if Pickford was replaced with another Sunderland academy player

Ive been saying for 2.5 years now that that is on. One sunderland born academy player retires from international football just as another one starts playing top division football and gets called up
