On the beach or sussed out?

Just that, if we miss out on top 10 and Europe, it's not the end of the world and consolidating ourselves as a PL club may be a slow and steady process across a few seasons, in the same way as Brighton, also Bournemouth and Brentford. That said, you do get the examples of Leicester and Forest, who made much faster progress
And look where Leicester are now. Also Forest are in a good place right now but were very close to going down a couple of times.
Going too fast doesn’t always work, give me steady progress any day

And there’s the reason for the dropped points yesterday.

It’s insane how some people don’t think it was the main factor.

Would love for us to play in Europe one day, but I do think we need to be realistic here.

It’s our first season back in the premier league for 8 years and the last 2 prem seasons have had all promoted clubs relegated.

Only aim this season was stop up, and we’ve mathematically done that with 3 games to spare.

I think the whole Europe talk needs to be shelved until we establish ourselves as a premier league club - see Brentford or Brighton etc.
I don't completely disagree, but I've supported Sunderland long enough and also know how the premier league is to know we are potentially only one bad transfer window away from relegation. As it happens I don't think we will qualify for Europe, but to say we actively don't want to qualify I just don't understand.

It's not a given we stay in the premier league for any length of time.

Tell me, we're we ready for premier league football this time last season?

The team that got us up certainly wasn’t ready for PL football. The owners however had a very ambitious plan and how many fans or pundits expected us to spend £170m. The obvious retort to European qualification is to suggest they’ll do the same to enlarge the squad depth to cope with a large amount of extra fixtures. The flaw in this argument is UEFA rules which limit spend to 70% of turnover as opposed to the PL’s 85%. So in essence you need a bigger squad with less money to spend, and it’s not the odd million or two, it would be around £30m. We’d probably have to make multiple sales to “fiddle” the numbers.

Been a decent season and one we would have all loved. Next season our young players will have more experience and they’ll be no afcon to deal with. Another mid table would be fine next season. Add a few more quality players in the summer to add to what we’ve got and I’m sure we’ll get it comfortably.

Agree, with all of that.
Being in Europe gives the opportunity to have a better transfer window and thus lessens the risk of a bad one.
The “too soon” brigade are way off.

Couple of questions for you…

1) Do you think we’d need a bigger squad for a European campaign than if we solely had the PL to focus on?

2) Do you think having £30m less to spend on the European enlarged squad than the PL squad would lead to a better European squad?

1) The squad would be the same size.
2) I’m not sure the calculation is as straightforward as just giving a figure. If the income is greater via Europe then the % of income would probably be similar in total to the higher % of not being in Europe, as far as I can see.

Anyway, we’re not in Europe next year.

But would you advocate we don’t try for Europe next season? Settle for bottom half again? Because that’s the attitude that gets you absolutely nowhere.

The problem here is that the increase in income from the Conference League in particular in no way compensates for the reduction in spending power. Even the Europa League is marginal.

Why would you not want to see your club play in Europe? Pure cuck mentality.
Or you have the brain of a 5 year old.

Ask Leicester how it's going after getting into Europe and throwing money at it.
We werent ready to go up 12 months ago. Looked how that has turned out.

This let's wait until we all die before European football stuff needs to get in the bin.

If we're good enough to qualify then bring it on we've got an entire summer to sign more players.

If we don't make it will be gutting as the chance was there but will still be a great season regardless.
We had one of the best transfer summers of any club in living memory - for the money spent. We would need another summer of near equal success to be ready for Europe. As it stands I think we need 2 left backs, 2 right wingers, 1 left winger, a new striker and at least a back up for Xhaka. Thats before any departures such as possibly Sadiki.

We'd been fine for success in Europe.

Maintaining league position and doing well in Europe is another story.
