Matty Young .

I swear the hardest job in football is to be the back up/ replacement to an outstanding player/ players.

A young keeper when we beat the mags at Al-Qiddīs Yaʿqūb park in one of his first games in English footy is actually canny impressive start when you think about it.

Actually thinking about it, his current away record in the prem is played 2 won 2, 1 clean sheet, at Leeds and the Saudis, many a player has crumbled in those circumstances
He played pretty well too apart from a couple of nervy moments which you'd expect. I think he's a bit of a find

Totally agree. Needs to work on them nervy moments and kick on in the summer but he’s been in net in 2 of the 4 wins away from home we’ve had all season. As a base to build from that is as strong as you could ask for.

Hahaha wheres this came from that I dont like local lads doing good? No I dont like playing players who are clearly not ready for the PL just because theyre local lads, and therefore endangering the jobs of tens if not hundreds of staff members who also happen to be local lads and lasses.

I’m sorry but Patterson wasn’t even a top championship keeper, he needed to be replaced, his strength/speed coming for crosses was woeful and did actually cost us points, im sorry that your memory eludes you but im more than happy to bring video evidence. There’s nothing wrong with him having a championship career, but to just wantonly “give a go” to a player in the most competitive league in the world just because they’re a local lad is cloud cuckoo shit.

I’m sure in this hypothetical that if we got relegated, one of the lasses being sacked off thought “whey it doesnt matter yanar because Patto got given a go”
I don’t recall mentioning you or quoting you, but you seem to show above, an irrational dislike for at least one of our young players who, in my eyes at least, has never let us down.

Made some good saves and looks comfortable enough. Roefs looks absolutely outstanding tbf, which is why he's beinv linked to big clubs.and will have a better career overall.

I think Ellborg will also have a fine career and Patterson will be good enough for top end championship.

This thread is supposed to be about Matty Young thpugh.

Aye fair. And when the inevitable happens with Roefs (fingers crossed not yet), it’d be fantastic to have Young come in and be the next real elite keeper. He looks to have the potential

I was talking to a Darlo fan at the Sunderland Women v Durham game a couple of years ago and he was telling me he was the best he’d ever seen there, even better than Pickford and Schmeichel at a similar age.

I'd actually keep Patterson as no. 2 and loan Ellborg out. Moore as no. 3

This fills to of our domestic squad places for next season and frees up a space for a foreign player
I can see why you'd say that, if it was just on performances I'd agree. But we can probably get a decent payday our of Patterson, and his value will only go down on the bench. Plus he'll want to be starting at his age.

For those that want to know Young kept another clean sheet.

They should have won it. Been coming on stronger in games towards the end and had a few great chances including one from Fabio missing at the far post. Matt didnt have much to do in 2nd half. Can see it being a playoff run. They must go up though as thats always been the aim. Butcher has been great for them this year

If Roefs did leave I’d personally like to see Young given a go as number one. Yes, he’s only played National League North and League Two football but, he’s played more men’s football than Roefs and Ellborg combined, before we signed them. Every time I watch him, he looks so composed and calm.
An experienced number two on the bench to take the pressure off, if required and I think it would work. It would also ensure we keep him, in case he fancies being someone’s permanent keeper.

Who was the last keeper to go from playing league 2 to Premier league football, a couple mistakes and he'd be hammered

Massive risk and the Premier League is not the place to take such a risk, imo. I'd loan him out to a Championship team and then assess after that. He's only 19 which is very young for a keeper and I assume we've got him on a long contract.

Wouldn’t be fair on him. A year in the championship to see how he does is best for everyone.

I agree it could be deemed a risk but he’s only a year younger than Ellborg with about 4 times as many first team appearances.
