Be careful what you wish for

At last I’ve found someone in the wilderness talking sense.

I referenced earlier Alan Durban who we binned whilst an established top league team, playing conservative football.

We ended up in the third division as a direct consequence.

RLB is trying a few things and we are all over the place. Hopefully they take on board what you say
Durban is a great reference. Look at the team he had built. Ashurst came in and dismantled it and took us straight down.

Loved Wembley, but left thinking Patto going to be our player of the year this season. Lad makes some great saves. Far beyond my expectations this year.

OP is spot on.

It felt like this season was different. Everyone was on the same page behind the team and there was a real sense of unity and disbelief at how well we were performing.

Felt like the mood started to change though after we lost to Liverpool. We were outclassed but lost narrowly 0-1 against the reigning champions. Their £100m playmaker ran the show.

"We didn't lay a glove on them"
"We didn't have a go"
"Where was the intensity?"

Anyone thinking rationally would surely realise we'd gone away to the runaway leaders on the Saturday before and put in a decent performance, but that naturally takes it out of players and it wasn't entirely surprising there was a drop-off when playing the champions just a few days later. The players aren't super human, the effort and intensity required to match teams of that quality is immense and it's impossible to do it every game, let alone when playing the midweek after.

Everyone said we'd collapse during AFCON but we didn't, we kept pace and picked up some decent results in tough games despite missing half the team during the busiest period of the season. The Christmas and New Year period massively favours the teams with the biggest squads. Not only do we not have a big squad, half our starting lineup were missing. We didn't really see the impact of that til about February/March. Players started to look tired and yes, there was a drop in intensity. We picked up a lot of injuries. At one point we were missing Roefs, Mukiele, Reinildo, Ballard, Le Fee and Traore, plus Brobbey and extended period without Xhaka before that. 7 regular starters - swap Sadiki for Traore and you've probably got out 7 best players. We had a shit result in the cup, a couple of home defeats, a couple of excellent away wins and decent results against Bournemouth and Spurs. Pretty much par for the course for a mid table side, never mind one with a shitload of injuries.

The overall quality of the Premier League has increased massively since we were last in it. Spurs finished 17th last season and are 18th this season but are the reigning Europa League winners and finished 4th in the Champions League ahead of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Inter, Juventus, PSG etc. Forest are 16th but in the Europa semi finals. There's only two shit teams this season when in the past you could take your pick from half the league. Just about every game is really tough but we've ground out results pragmatically to position ourselves comfortably in mid table with an outside chance of Europe. That's incredible. But also not enough for some? Just find that a bit disappointing.

Coventry Stoke and Blackburn have put 5 past us in recent seasons. They were shit sides in a lower division.Forest are in the Premier and will likely win a European trophy. This defeat in no way resembles those poor performances. In the second half I consider we could have scared the pants off them I’d the disallowed goal had stood.
You are delusional if you think us bringing the score back to 1-4 would have ‘scared the pants off them’ 😂😂

I don’t agree that booing was an acceptable reaction given the season we’ve had. Does the players no good whatsoever.
People weren’t booing because of the season we had. They booed because we were lifting in the first half and the level of performance in that half was completely below an acceptable level. I didn’t boo because of the context you say but I can understand why people did and IMO fair fks to them.

Well yes people can do what they like but in my opinion it wasnt warranted. Only thick twats would think that booing a performance would have any positive bearing on it.

Its been a fanatastic performance by us this season to be where we are. Last year when we finished 4th we were nearer to 17th place in points than we were to the top two. Nobody gave us a prayer. We were there to make up the numbers and the only issue really was whether we could be vaguely competitive. Could we be as good as Ipswich the season before maybe? We spent good money but that in itself did no more than give us a glimmer. The squads of Burnley and Leeds had far stronger starting positions having been in the premier league the season before their promotion and still spending 100mill on top of that.

We decided on a system of play and we bought players perfect for that system of play. Defensive, attritional, low block, minimise space, limit chances to the opposition. But its never good enough for some. The quality of the football is 'shite' we need to play more progressive football and even the managers position being questioned by some. We have seen in the last 2 games why we don't play more progressive football with our current players - they aren't good enough and weren't bought with it in mind. Next season i dont want us making significant changes to what we have done this season. Evolution not revolution. Buying players to imporve the quality but keep broadly the same system and we can improve even more.
Nah, all been lucky. Sack the manager and bring in some duffer for a managerial performance bounce.

Read it on here so should work

I doubt any1 thought it was gunna make them play better marra, just simply to let them know it was unacceptable. Kinda like when they play well you clap or if they score a goal you cheer.

Question. When a ref makes a terrible decision do you boo him or do you clap him so that he might referee better?

Pardon me for butting in to a debate that doesn't involve me, but from the outside looking in you've had a great season - genuinely great. Not many promoted sides these days go up, completely rebuild their side and do as well as you have. I've watched a fair few of your games that have been on live and have been really impressed with the business you've done. Some of the lads you've signed look like they've been at that level all of their lives and that is no mean feat.

Your toughest season is yet to come, next season. You might lose a few players and have to replace at the toughest level to replace players. I hope there weren't any of your fans booing but without the context that you get from supporting your side, I understand.

Enjoy the summer!

As far as the points are concerned.
Sunderland gave up the last five games to win the play offs.
Can't argue with the rest mind.
Would like to see European games again ( I was there for the other ones ).
But evolution is correct. 👍

Mate we had 38k in that last season of league one with an average away following of a few hundred at times, with the sell out away ends there’s not that many returning fans that weren’t in the 38k in league one and 41k in the championship. Not as if we’ve found 20k new fans down the back of the couch 😂

We only had 30k'ish in L1 on average

Even last season we had games as low as 35k

The Championship season when we first went down you'd be lucky if it was 20k, the place was empty most the time.

You’re 100% right but to polite.

The behaviour of those fans who booed and left at half time, says far far more about them than the players.

Quitters, weak, immature, no back bone, shit attitude …. Usually terms directed at Sunderland teams , but in this instance applies to the first half leavers and those who booed

Interesting how those that remained were an absolute credit to the club and themselves

Don’t do yourself a disservice by justifying it. What possible benefit can it bring to the players, team and result.

Peoples inability to handle short term disappointment is a reflection on them, if they had a brain cell they would realise that only a hypocrite would abuse a player then next time out celebrate with them.

Cracking post — well said.

You give him a hard time to influence his decision making…. Don’t give a shit about how it impacts his confidence and determination to learn and go again.

There's not a game this season where we've picked up points that I've not enjoyed it like. Our battling performances please me more than fancy football.

The same defensive structure with slightly better/quicker counter attacking moves next season will do me just fine.
This for me as well. We have been so well organised dropping into our defensive shape and then going after the ball as a unit.

Its our first season back and it will take time to get the squad where we want it to be

Its not about benefit. It’s just about letting them know it’s unacceptable. I’d like to think that the players know that themselves. And you are without doubt right, it’s not going to be a positive.

But it happens in all sports. Fans are heavily emotionally invested. If they weren’t, that sound when Ballard scored the winner against Coventry wouldn’t have been the loudest I’ve ever heard at a sports event. It’s difficult to turn those emotions on and off and I wouldn’t want it.

Also 4-0 down half time and if instead we’d had a mixture of silence and dull clapping in the crowd I’m not sure would have had a positive effect either. On some level it would have been a sign that those levels of performance were ok or at the very least less unacceptable.

Either way hope to fk we never have to debate crowd reaction to a 5-0 home drubbing for another 50 year.

The players and manager have talked all season about the connection with the fans, it's even become a meme in Regis' interviews. If you think that booing them for one bad 25 minute performance won't have an effect on them (and not a positive one) you're crazy.
