Objectively Should This Team Be Doing Better

Not a Le Bris out thread but one of the big contradictions about us is when you look at pundits, Journos, our own fans opinions the general consensus is that this team man for man is one of the best we have had for decades.

Remove the newly promoted perception and you could make a case for almost all of the 11 that have started the last few games being talked about for bigger and better things.

Roefs is one of the most coverted young goalkeepers in the league. Had a bit of a collapse in form since the injury but will be targeted for big money by champions league clubs in the summer.

Our back 4 likewise. I could see any of those starting today getting offers from top clubs in the summer with the exception of Reineldo only because of his age. Wouldn’t be at all surprised to see the top 4 targeting Mukiele and Ballard.

Sadiki likewise is being linked to Chelsea and Man Utd.

Xhaka is a cut above.

Le Fee being linked with Arsenal.

Brobbey interest from Bayern Munich and one of the best physical strikers in the league.

These aren’t inflated fan views this is the reality that probably 8 or 9 of those starting tonight will either be on the radar for clubs well above us or have come from that level and are winding down.

So without wanting to criticise Le Bris, if we take off the newly promoted tag and lower expectations that come with it, objectively with the players we can put on the pitch is 10th to 15th really better then par? I’d argue a lot of the view that it is is simply because we are a promoted club and not actually assessing where we should be with the players we have. Which might become more obvious next season when 5 or 6 of those starting tonight could easily be playing for Champions League clubs if we are willing to sell in the summer.

Not really. I read everywhere how other fans think we’re lucky because of things like xG etc. as much as I think that’s a pointless stat because of the way we play, you can’t deny the fact that if our defence can’t defend we struggle. Our whole emphasis has been be a team that’s hard to beat. But we’ve been dog at the back for a while now. I genuinely watch teams like Bournemouth and get jealous at their attacking threat. You could even say the say tonight with Forest.

We should not be gettimg beat 5 nil at home with the players we have.....never mind vs this forest side.

Apart from the real dross like Burnley there really aren't that many squads in the PL that don't have 5 or 6 excellent players in their ranks. So yeah, midtable is still a solid performance.

If we take off the newly promoted tag and pretend that Roefs, Sadiki, Le Feè and Brobbey are good enough for Chelsea, Man United, Arsenal and Bayern then aye they're underperforming.

If you look at what they actually are and look closely at the talent in this league, 14th is probably about right.

The part that a lot of people miss is that we're good defensively because of our defensive structure, not because of our defenders.

We've tried to have a bit more attacking intent the last 2 weeks and our midfield has opened right up and the defence can't function properly without those reinforcements from midfield.

It's a bit of a conundrum because it's not as easy as just letting the handbrake off next season and attacking more.

I posted on the match thread that this isnt really a promoted team and that we are sitting on the line between achieving and underachieving.

There is still 4 games left so plenty chance to go top 10 which i think we have the quality to do.

But ill hardly be pissed off with an 11/12th place finish.

Lower than that and id say weve underachived.

Exactly my perspective..RLB is a shit coach

I thought we were mentality monsters early in the season, we’ve definitely seen a few heads lost. Played like strangers first half today.
