Luke O'Nien

As much as as we all love 09, you could it was his fault for the 1st goal, although no-one was tracking McGlynn
Almost scored and OG when Watkins stuck it always for Villa's 2nd (certainly would have been had he touched it)
Nowhere near Rodgers when villa went 3-1
Nowhere near cutting out the cross for Villas winner

If Ballard is fit for Friday, surely he starts?

Now before anyone starts, I love the lad (09), but you surely he sits out the next game on the bench.
You've said yourself there the first he had to have an eye on mcgin who has waltzed past mukiele.
He couldn't leave the front of goal with zero defenders and be pulled to the back by Watkins. If he did that and mcgin scored then he'd be blamed for being out of position.

The third - he's not supposed to be near Rogers! He's on Watkins - he can't be expected to mark both.
This is the issue - people WANT to look at ways to blame him

For 3 of the goals if you pause it before the ball comes in, we are pretty fine and o'nein is touch tight to watkins etc or in a good position. He then just switches off while the strikers come to life and make a run. The 4th goal is exactly the same.

Theres no shame in being outclassed by players like that at this level. But it doesn't mean he should be kept around just because its hard. You need to find a way to cope if you want to be a PL player.

Let’s cut the “mr Sunderland” bull shit. He is absolutely rank at this level. Should have conceded a penalty against Leeds. Gave a goal away against the mags and was at fault for 3 of the goals today. The lad is hopeless ffs

Bit of an obsession you have like. Take a breather lad, it's not good for you.

The criticism he gets can be slightly over the top but I think he’s a bit out of his depth at this level. The constant flinging himself at the ball as he’s usually a yard off the pace is a bit of a clue.

Reinildo couldn’t handle McGinn yesterday at all.

09 simply hasn't got the awareness or speed of thought within the 18 yard when he comes up against top class movement, like Watkins goals yesterday. Simple as that really. Watkins rolled him with ease all game aswel. He simply is a downgrade on our other cb's we have. Nothing personal or 'slagging' him off...it's just the reality.
Great post. He doesn't make the right movements or have an awareness for 3 of the goals yesterday at least.

Good at bringing the ball out and getting us playing mind. He himself will think he played shit yesterday, but people on here were blaming Alderete for not swapping positions with him constantly.

O'nien is what he is.
2 wrongs don't make a right. Diarra getting it from some, Onien from you and others.
My point was that it's not just an O'Nien thing. Some people just can't handle him getting any criticism. We even had people on here last night blaming xhaka for telling the keeper to give Luke the ball at SJP and blamed Alderete for not swapping with Luke yesterday to 'protect him'.

He played shite and got criticism. Thats how it works really.

He was poor , everyone knows that but yours and some others posts were terrible. Bang out of order. I suggest you read them.

Over and out

Christ the criticism this lad gets is unbelievable mind.
Not necessarily. A huge percentage of our fan base love the lad, me included, but if we're brutally honest, he was crap yesterday.

Far too many posters on here get lynched for having a negative opinion. If I was to say I thought O'Nien played excellent yesterday, I'd be lying.

Pure rage as well. Often find the most likeable people face this from a minority. Psychiatrists dream they are.
In one of the pod casts Luke talks about how even after a win he will always avoid social media for 24/48 hours due to how much negativity there is.

The fact he says 'even after a good game'. Tells me Luke is well aware he will always be singled out regardless. I think thats why Xhaka is now quite protective over him too.

The fact that its so predictable what will happen is the annoying thing. Before the derby there loads saying he will either get sent off, give away a goal or a penalty. We all knew it would happen.

He's done so much for the club and its fine if we have nobody else but we are keeping far better players on the bench yesterday.

Agree with this mind. The lads been a great servant to the club, and is genuinely a good fella to have around the place, but some folk on here go on like you've called one of their children if you say he's not good enough to be playing or starting games every week.

I think having Geertruida sat there makes things look worse as Onien shouldn't be getting picked before that lad tbh.

He'll always be a club legend in my eyes, he's earned that right. A player with O'Nien's ability range needs to be coming off the bench. Possibly into a back 5 if we're trying to hang on to points.
