Matty Young .

Because he needs a change to develop, just like Patto. If Roeffs stays, its a tough choice which one of the 2 warms the bench and which goes out on loan. Could almost make a deal with a club to take each for 1/2 the season.
If Roeffs goes, I'm not convinced the club will want either as outright 1st choice either. They dropped Patto decicively, and Elborg hasn't impressed, let's be honest.
He didn’t even have a pre‑season — that’s not his fault. He was thrown straight into the team when Roefs got injured. He wasn’t used to this level, it’s a new country, new culture, everything. We signed him to give him time to settle in the North East and learn our tactics. This is real life, not a Football Manager game.
Because he's simply not ready to be a 1st choice in the prem unless he improves a lot during his summer holidays, or we ship goals we have got away with it for the most part.
So far for Sunderland, he has:
  • Conceded 2 goals
  • In 3 Premier League appearances
  • With 1 clean sheet
That’s his record since joining in Jan 2026 and playing first‑team league football.

Thats impressive stats.

All very valid points tbf.
Although it is also the most classic SMB ever - "He just needs a good pre-season"

I'd actually keep Patterson as no. 2 and loan Ellborg out. Moore as no. 3

This fills to of our domestic squad places for next season and frees up a space for a foreign player
Patterson needs to go. He is simply not good enough.

I’d prefer Patterson in than Elborg atm

Eh Elborg was dropped in at the last minute and has only conceded 2 PL goals and already has a PL clean sheet.

I know Patto is a local lad, and he made some absolutely outrageous saves in the play off final, so people have their loyalty to him, but this is rose tinted, he is mercurial to say the least, surely you can remember how much we all used to shit our pants when Patto was in nets in the Championship, because i’ll never forget. Lad nearly gave me about 7 strokes in the Beale season.

I want him to do well as a local lad, and keeping him on our bench is just stifling him, because he’s not PL quality, whereas Elborg probably could be. Patto needs to be in the Championship playing.

Love Patterson and he's been a great servant to the club, but with the quality of crosses coming into the box in this league, I'd die of a heart attack having to watch us with him in goal in this league.

Amazing shot stopper, but not the best at commanding the box.

I genuinely think Ellborg has some real potential, and he's been thrown into the Lion's den. I was impressed how he composed himself in the mags game after the horrific pass to O'Nien. Showed he's got a got a cool head for a young lad which is only going to get better as he matures.

The club obviously rate him...

Me too. I could say that I don't understand the negativity for Patto, but come to think of it, there were a few people not all that happy with him in the promotion season, so I guess they'll be doubtful of him in the Prem.
People will deny it but some of our fans aren’t keen on a local lad done good. Roefs has been amazing for us, but at the start of the season I was quite happy for Patterson to be given a go.

I know nothing to do with Young but what happened to Adam Richardson, was meant to be very highly rated. Got a pro contract then seemingly disappeared 🤷‍♂️

I disagree, I never felt overly nervous with Patterson, even though he has a few faults. I’m a nervous wreck with Elborg
he made some incredible saves at times. Our defence were weaker when Elborg came in when roefs injured.
2 goals concendeds in 3 PL games with ONE clean sheet. Im more than confident he will get better once he get his preseason up to speeds.

He only struggled at Port Vale because the pitch was absolutely shocking. Chelsea rode their luck at home. If we played them at our place, we’d beat them easily. That awful pitch at Port Vale gave them a big advantage.

I totally disagree. Elborg had had a couple of dodgy kicks, but every one of Patterson's is and Elborg is more confident with crosses
Patterson has the slowest working brain, with the ball at his feet, that I've ever seen for a professional footballer. A bit of the local lad syndrome going on here.

Elborg will come good, but how many goals have been conceded because of Patterson’s kicking? I can’t remember any in 4/5 seasons. He may not be spraying passes around but he’s always confident receiving the ball and getting it away.

Why Leeds and Newcastle didn’t put Elborg under any pressure at all is a mystery to me.

I would say we have conceded a few. A few times when we were ahead of drawing he kicked the ball into touch and have the opposition possession, putting us under pressure. Patterson has had time to improve his footwork and kicking, and hasnt, he is just not good enough.

I don’t think you can say putting the ball into touch directly leads to a goal
