Running Thread 2026

The fast runners (even though they are barely doing 6 minutes per mile ) should get out the way of the slower runners. No one has eyes in the back of their head. The fast runners can look ahead and take remedial action. The slow runners cannot, and shouldn't therefore have to.
Parkrun ? It's not a race is it ? Nobody wears a number ! If the 'faster runners' (and I use the term loosely) are so concerned, then do a 5k road race, or better still a 5k track race when the correct protocol is observed.
Since when did a parkrun become anything other.

If you want a fast time do something different.
Completely agree, first place did it in 16 minutes yesterday so pretty nippy but it's not like they're training to make Team GB based on that one event.

Cheers, I'm shattered. Just had an hour or so kip and feel worse than what I did before it, imagine I'll nod off again sometime this afternoon for a more substantial sleep.

I guess just commit to it, I'd earmarked this weekend for the challenge quite a while ago. Plan a few different routes to reduce the monotony and have multiple alarms set for each run. Obviously take them all slow, no point burning yourself out going full pelt....it's as much a test of mentality as it is of running ability.
Well done - quite an achievement. Not only the running, but the planning you had to do. Once the adrenaline surge has left you will hopefully get a good rest. Hope you can move afterwards.
Will enjoy a gentle jog this sunny morning.

Why? Parkrun is for all.

It is for everyone, but crucially it is not a race, never has been and was never intended to be, and the quicker, more competitive participants should make allowances for those who see it as thirty plus minutes of sweat, well-being and sociable effort.
And I’d say on the whole people don’t treat it as a race and those who do are usually respectful of others. Belittling those “who aren’t even doing 6 minute pace” just comes across as bitter.

Unfortunately in all sports there are some (a minority in my experience) who consider themselves superior and are invariably snobs with a false sense of elitism and entitlement.

I get that completely. And out a start and finish line anywhere and some people will treat it as a race, it’s human nature for some.

But one person’s 18min 5k is another’s 30min 5k. As long as everybody is respectful then run it how you want; easy, hard, as a race, as training - whatever you want.

I’m certainly not one of the fastest around that track but know a few of them that are and they’re nothing but genuinely nice people who will happily go round folk by using the grass.

They are fine in my experience. It’s the fellow 25min + runners next to you that seem to shout it out for no reason. Probably the same people that like to tell everyone else to ‘sshhhh’ at the start. Full of themselves imo

Shout what out? For people to move or are they just saying that somebody is coming to their left to help not cause a collision?

I’ve gone past people and shouted ahead to say I’m coming through on the left then thanked anybody I’ve passed.

Never heard the shhhushs mind, that would irk me slightly 😂

I've done over 300 Parkruns all over the country and honestly never heard any of this, the one thing I love about running is that it is a freindly sport.

My local parkrun (Woodhouse Moor in Leeds) is busy and we have these issues. Personally I don't shout ahead as I don't feel comfortable doing it and think it can come across a bit arrogant (even though I know that's not the intention of those who do it). On Saturday I heard the runner behind me announce that he was passing the slower runners (to the right), and someone took exception to it pointing out that it's not a race.

In terms of the shushing, WHM is terrible for people blatantly failing to listen to any of the pre-run instructions and thank yous, so I'm fully on board with it.

Signed up for the Bridgwater Half Marathon in September, something to aim for at least. Done the GNR a few times and never managed a sub 2hr, so hopefully fourth time lucky!

I read it as shushing the announcer - I think I’ve misread that.

Certainly no arrogance in saying I’m passing on your left, more just a way to avoid a potential collision. I take your point on board mind. It’s not a race, however, people are just naturally faster than others and on a looped course overtaking is inevitable. I’ve nothing but positive things to say about those who run round CLS in all honesty.

Shouting to move over for someone else. The person running fast can do it if they want but usually they can get past without needing to.

CLS is great overall though, bit congested at the start but I presume they’d all be like that. I’ll have to try some other ones soon

Darlington is three laps so lots of overtaking, but plenty room to do so.
In theory faster runners start at front, but inevitably a little congestion at start.

Managed to get along to Riverside park run for the first time today, canny run but the constant banging on about moving out of the way of the faster runners is no doubt off putting for some.
Aye its way more serious then Herrington Park - its a park run chill out.

Also clocked up a steady 7.5K tonight...back from injury and hopefully jut in time to get trained up for the Sunderland half next month.
