He is absolutely somebody worth persevering with imo.
Surrey were well out of the game after the first innings so it allowed him in the second to take his time and bat the way he did fair play to him.
He clearly a very very talented cricketer.

At times, he made batting look preposterously easy, too. Certainly, none of the Warwickshire bowlers were able to rush him. And, with a clear focus to save the game rather than try to set up a declaration, he demonstrated a restraint that has not always been apparent in his time with England. His century, for example, occupied 199 deliveries.
I don't think his ability was ever questioned. His ability to exercise control was.

I'd happily persist with Smith if he shows some early season form and if he has a poor series against NZ then that will be the time to drop him. I am a big fan of Foakes but Smith has a higher ceiling.
Who replaces Crawley is an interesting race. Haines will be in their thoughts, and I think if McKinney can make a couple of big scores he will be right in the mix.

Listened to Mark Butcher on Wisden who pointed out a couple of technical tweaks that Smith has put into practice which seem to be serving him well.
It’s quite exciting. He has the talent to completely marmalize an attack.
The only question mark over him is whether he has the mentality to succeed at Test level. He looked completely broken in Australia.

He absolutely did, but I think somebody relatively young and relatively inexperienced should not be judged on one series.
He was certainly not the first and will definitely not be the last to look like that in a Aussie away series.
Looks like really knuckled down and started the season really well and all credit to him
