34 Years Ago Today…

“When Atkinson crossed that ball it had thank you written all over it.”

Norwich v SAFC Hillsbrough

I always thought Atkinson was going to be a top player… how wrong was I, but he played brilliant in this game .
Got there about half an hour before KO. Remember being amazed at how steep our end was.

The KOP end that day was a sight to behold, I was in main stand
34 years, incredible.
Norwich had a good side then, in Europe IIRC bearing the likes of Bayern Munich.
I was so happy when we signed John Byrne, he had a little bit of swagger about him and always played well against us! And wore his shirt outside his shorts…very cool

We forget we were a second tier team

Think I was about halfway up. Was getting vertigo.

So much talent. But old school game soft as shite!
Probably have a better career now. Always decent on ball.

Then this to tip him over edge

I got a couple of tickets the day before the match through work having queued overnight at Roker and failed to get one. My wifes uncle picked up the tickets in Sheffield for me as he lived there. We agreed to meet at Sheffield Cathedral - i have no idea why but he must have thought it was a good spot. Me and me mate drove up from London but couldn't get close to the cathedral, so we dumped the car (in those days you could do this without fear of cameras etc) and ran. I'd only met him once before and I wasn't sure he'd recognise me. This wasn't helped by the fact we had our faces painted (my missus did charity fete's etc and was an expert - The old badge, red and white down the face, black ship on our foreheads, blue background lol) as I approached him on the steps of the cathedral he just handed the tickets over without a word - he looked totally shocked lol. Got to the ground with not much time to spare and only then realised that we were in with the Norwich fans. Sh*t. As it happens they were good as gold but it did feel like we were really taking the piss. Had an absolutely perfect view of the goal though as we were sat behind the cross. So much better to have been in with the Sunderland fans but at least we were there. Getting a ticket for the final was easy peasy lol. My first was born a week or so after the final. He was always going to be called after his Grandad but my wife agreed we could also name him after the winning goalscorer in the event that we won so long as it wasn't Anton (Rogan)

Ahhhh and that clock which seemed to be stuck on 87mins for about an hour it seemed .Those who were there know but what a cracking day.
Certainly remember the clock seeming to be stuck. But also remember me, my Dad, and my two brothers standing on our seats, hugging each other, and jumping around on the full time whistle. Seems impractical in reality, but that’s how I remember it. Great day.
