Running Thread 2026

2 hours 7:41 which is my PB in Middlesbrough, over the moon

That's amazing, well done
Well done mate, didn't realise how big the event was like just checked the results and it had about 3500 in.

Cheers, quite a friendly course like apart from having to run past the Riverside Stadium 😬

Yea and that's the only incline of the course

Absolutely broken after Boro half today.
Went out far too quick and knocked a 1 minute 20 off my 10k pb in the first half and had to cling on for dear life in the end.
Chip time of 1:30:42. Watch said 1:29:33 like so i’m convincing myself it’s watch over chip.

I go watch/Strava time like. Unless you're the elite you're likely weaving in and out of people, moving off to the side for water etc so can easy add extra distance

1:38.40 at Boro HM pretty pleased with that! Easy week ahead, definitely been going too hard on the mileage and playing Padel multiple times a week. Valetta 10k in a few weeks time, should be nice and warm 😅
Padel has done for me. Am due to run the Cambridge half this coming Sunday, but halfway through a game of padel this morning my calf tore as accelerated to run towards the net. Am hobbling around now, and assume that's me done for a few weeks:(. Did 8k yesterday and it felt fine, but I think it is an overuse injury (and also being mid 50s), so I suppose better happening now than halfway round the run.

Ouch, the joys of age. Aye Padel is taking over a bit for me lately like, been playing for 2 years but up until Xmas it was just a weekly knockabout with the lads. My uncle has started playing and plays like 4-5 times a week so since the turn of the year and I've been jumping in with him a lot, 4 games last week alone! Definitely feeling some of the effects of all the jumping, dashing side to side and general explosiveness of the sport in the legs like. Just the one game and a couple easy runs this week then hopefully right back into full activity.

Now that it goes dark later, and *some* ground isn’t waterlogged or muddy, I have re-started running this week after about a year of not running (except for short sprints if the dog takes off).

I only really enjoy trail runnng and XC. Tuesday was 3 miles and I pushed myself a little, today was a 60mins plod mainly on paths.

I had forgotten how good running is for mental health and it’s nice to get out again. I doubt that I’ll enter races or set PBs but I aim to have a more holistic exercise plan.

Nice work mate. Nowt finer than the trails for the mind I find, although I’m definitely more of a road/pavement runner.

I appreciate it isn’t for everyone, but I find races to be brilliant experiences and genuinely exhilarating. The training block gives me a focus, the race is usually a wonderful atmosphere and the high at the end of it is very addictive. They’re the “fun” part for me and accommodating for all levels.

Managed to grab a 5k pb on Wednesday at the Houghton Harriers handicap. I set out for sub 19 at the beginning of the year and on a course with hills and overall incline I came in at 19:05 in the middle of an HM block. Tempted to book the quayside 5k in April to try and go under 19.

I ran quite a few 5, 10k races and about 3 half marathons between 2000 and 2010 and I did like to have a plan as a focus.

Then I switched to mainly strength training so I tend to alternate between that and running when my progress stalls.

I’ve found that for me I’m never going to excel at either, and when I want to improve by 5-10% then something has to change e.g. diet and lifestyle. Plus I tend to collect injuries if I push myself.

Now that I’m 50+ I have the mantra of doing something is better than doing nothing though I can still feel competitive with myself, and running is addictive.

Yeah I completely hear you on that. I used to flip between the two regularly. In simple terms I’d look better when weight training and feel better when running (mentally). With kids and work I had to kinda pick one to ‘dedicate’ myself to and running was that choice.

Injuries are a pain in the arse, literally in my case as I suffered with piriformis (so?) syndrome regularly when I started upping my mileage but have found dynamic stretching and strength exercises that I can do in the house have helped a lot.

It’s certainly addictive! Plan my life around my runs now 😂 mrs is supportive with it as she knows how it helps me, but not overly supportive 😂 so a lot of my runs are after I’ve got kids to sleep, which is a fair compromise. I find the clobber and trainers to be the addictive side! I buy something pretty much monthly.

Love the trails me

Yep I'm always looking at new trainers haha, Adidas just released this new ones that look really nice hopefully they do some more colours.

Aye as a competitor to the megablast. Just can’t prise myself away from the megablast. Genuinely the best trainer I’ve ever owned and can’t see adidas doing anything better than that - although the upper is dog shit for a £200+ trainer I just love the feel of them. Will do my HM tempo run in them today I think.

👍 I usually do local routes but I might be more adventurous this year, we’re 30 mins drive from Cannock chase, Derbyshire hills etc.

The trent & Mersey canal is about a mile away though I find towpaths to be too flat and monotonous. I prefer to climb stiles, avoid cows and grumpy farmers.

A stile or avoiding livestock always gives an excuse for a walking break too 😀

It was Woodhouse Moor's (Leeds) 900th parkrun today, apparently making it one of the first in the world to reach that milestone. 792 runners and I was third finisher :D

I was also first finisher at Temple Newsam last week. Not wanting this to sound like a brag, just happy with how my running is progressing since joining a running club last summer. I'd highly recommend it 👍

Manchester marathon training going well. It’s my first marathon and living in the city, I’m really looking forward to it. 30km today at race pace, new shoes arrive this week and first time I’ve used gels during my training block. Fingers crossed training carries on this way!!
27k done today which is my longest run ever , God knows where I find about 15k from in 6 weeks 🤣
Doing Manchester mate?
